Pompey set for Europe?

So Pompey are off to a fantastic start and who can blame fans for dreaming. We do have to face facts though, we have only played three games. A defeat tomorrow against Wigan followed by defeat at Charlton and Pompey will have had an ordinary start.

Our target for the year is top ten. That is what the players are saying, so that is obviously what the aim is?

Pompey have increased their wage budget by 30%, showing real intent. They also tried to sign and did sign some top class players during the transfer window.

The latest poll gives you fans an idea what the majority of Pompey fans truly believe…

Europe?

1)Yep this year
2) No not for a few years yet
3) Next year

A great start & hopeful of win against Wigan but come on, let's not get too carried away. If we are in the top 8 come March well maybe.

A loss and we are back to the reality of Premier League football. Look how Middlesborough must have had high aspirations after downing Chelsea, only to be brought suddenly back down to earth by a rampant Pompey. It is a fickle game sometimes and we must stay firming focussed on Mid Table security. Achieving Europe could prove too premature (remember Ipswich playing Champions League football whilst heading for relegation)...Indeed remember Alf Ramsay's Ipswich getting promoted (1962 ?) and winning the English Championship the following year, only to be relegated the next. Isolated cases yes but it goes to show it happens. It didn't help Evertons cause either, simply just too many games played. You need a BIG squad. Maybe 2008 when we might become a Premiership Power with a new stadium (wishful thinking on the latter)....

I think talking of Europe just yet is crazy. Lets face it we we're almost certain to go down with only a handful of games left last season. Let's keep going as we are, know it's an old cliche but take a game at a time. Like storagematt says let's wait until early next year, if we are still in a similar position yeah lets BELIEVE it will happen. Don't get my wrong I'd love it but running before we can walk might not be a good thing? Look at Ipswich, they were flying, got into Europe before they were ready and this effected them, an we know what happended to them... We are better equipt than they were granted, but lets enjoy it whilst we can without getting too carried away...

Next time he meets Thatcher he will need a repercushion !!

I think the financial resources at the club's disposal suggests that even if we made the UEFA Cup next year Harry would be able to add to his squad and ensure we had cover for our weaker positions. I think some of those types of players who saw our league position from last year and would turn us down - would think more positively after a successful season culminating in a UEFA Cup spot. You've got to have high Team goals - and a UEFA Cup spot is possible with our current resources and more to come. The only question mark in my mind - is how will our new exciting midfielders settle in over the next few months ? If they do well, then I think we could do as well as Boro did last year in next year's UEFA Cup !!!! Still time will tell. Better than dreading a relegation fight !

To start saying it know is very farfetched but i'm sure we can do it!

as a neutral i think harry has bought well and the start is a confidence one, i wish you all luck, i bought james and campbell for my fantasy league team so i am backing you for a good season :) i think europe is a strong possibility

lol your all talking about europe? But nobody has mentioned a good league cup or FA cup run. I think midtable and a good cup run is our aim this season. With the team we have i see no reason why we couldnt do very well in the cups

I'm off to Lisbon, Portugal in October to celebrate my 40th with my family. As always, I'll have a Pompey shirt with me. Pompey in Europe. Now that's out of the way, let's concentrate on each game. See where we are come March with a dozen games to go.

Before our promotion season, the Premiership was merely a pipedream, and so was having a squad full of international quality players........... but here we are,so why not dream on and hope for the next progression too ?? All I know is that I am loving every minute of being a Pompey fan right now,and whilst I daren't truly believe that European football is on it's way to Fratton,I refuse to readily discount it,and if it doesn't happen it won't change my life. So i'll be cheering week in week out in the hope that we can do it,and relishing every minute of what is the most exciting period of my 34 years of following our great club. Play Up Pompey !!!!!!

with all new faces in club it's time for europe, just don't forget why big clubs are good, because they have very long bench with very good players, season is very long......

I think we may get there but it will be through a Cup berth. I really believe that this is going to be a brilliant tournament type team.
Toronto4Pompey
play up pompey i have, indeed, since the season started been banging on boringly about 10th place and a nice cup run....although i've ( following the odd pint of refreshment you understand) occaisionaly allowed myself to dream of an 8th place and a nice cup run.
