Fernandes on his Past and his Pompey

Fernandes on his Past and his Pompey

Fernandes has said that he moved to Pompey because he was ambitious but claimed that he has nothing against Benfica.

"On the one hand I felt sad to leave Benfica, which is the club in my heart, and where I had been for 12 years, but on the other hand I was happy to begin an adventure in England and to now start not just a new chapter in my career but also new, exciting and tempting challenges," Fernandes told Gestifute.com.

"I have nothing against Benfica. Everyone at the club was impeccable."

"It is true that I played with an injury, but these things happen, there`s nothing to say about that. Now I want to wish all the luck in the world to my ex-colleagues, tell them that I am right behind them, and that I hope Benfica win every competition they`re playing in."

"I had an ambition to play outside Portugal, but if it didn`t happen, my future was with Benfica, and Benfica, always Benfica."

"My intention is that my experience in England will turn me into a better player, and to be better than the others. I know I have a lot of things to improve, things that I have to learn and I have to say that this is a great place to learn and to grow."

Fernandes has remarked that having Mendes alongside him will help (a fellow countryman), "My intention is that my experience in England will turn me into a better player, and to be better than the others. I know I have a lot of things to improve, things that I have to learn and I have to say that this is a great place to learn and to grow."

Given time to settle in & trust his injury has cleared up, he just could be a really top signing.

I'm glad he's wanting to learn his trade with Pompey - he'll have to play well to get into our great midfield as I think Davis and Mendes are playing really well at the moment together....

I've heard plenty of good things about the lad, can't wait to see if he can live up to it following his injury.

With Doncaster and Plymouth yet to play Portsmouth took advantage to close the gap and extend it on the chasing pack. Newport & Leyton Orient look likely to be relegated.

Video - Pompey 2-1 Newport

With Stevenage drawing and Blackpool the only potential challenger winning we've got a six point cushion on Boro that's effectively seven given our superior goal difference.
