There was no birthday present for Guy Whittingham yesterday as Pompey slipped to their fifth consecutive defeat at Bury`s Gigg Lane.
Over eight hundred visiting fans swelled the gate to a massive 3,280 but they were to face the long trip home after another defeat. Guy shuffled the pack and back came Mikkel Andersen in goal and Darel Russell after injury. Akos Buzsaky had a hamstring injury and missed out.
It was though the same old story of little created and two goals conceded, although the second was from a rather dubious penalty.
So caretaker boss Guy ended Guy Fawkes week with no return and now the three Pompey stalwarts - with Andy Awford and Paul Hardyman must attempt to find some firepower in the loan market quickly to halt the worrying slide down the table.
I think I will call them the GAP band (Guy, Andy and Paul) as they are filling in at present. The task they are left with is daunting as it seems the club has been drifting in recent weeks with Appy have his attentions elsewhere. Luke Rodgers and Josh Thompson have left on loan when the former boss was hoping the like of Liam Walker would move to gain experience.
Add to that the decision to play Scott Allan last week after the serious accident he had been involved in ended in a three game ban for the young midfield star and left Pompey again short on resources.
The GAP band though, has the full support of the fans and the threesome with some 700 Pompey have the club in their blood and will work and work to improve things.
The only question is - will that be enough?
A sad week for Pompey
Not only have Pompey lost the services of much loved boss Michael Appleton this week but also mourned the passing of the final two links to their Championship winning sides.
On Wednesday Appy jumped ship in a manner which upset a number of fans but came as no surprise to me. He had obviously been told to say nothing about the interviews that had been going on and instead of simply giving a 'No comment` reply chose to deny any knowledge of an approach. That meant that fans began to call him a liar and phrases such as worse than Redknapp were well used.
The problem with the job market is that you often run the risk of losing the job if you bleat to a journalist that you have been interviewed of been offered before your new employer is ready to make an announcement.
Appy can now commence a career in football management not the crisis management he has been involved in for the last twelve months. The only problem he faces is showing the Blackpool fans that he can manage a side on the football pitch as he has had little practice at Pompey. More than often the side has picked itself from the slim resources available and the bench only half full leaving no room to change things around.
Toast says a big thanks to Appy as without him the club may well have folded and he has proved to all Pompey fans that he was made from the same mould they were and will fight to the end for a cause they believe in.
The two players who passed away are commemorated here. It is strange that they should pass away within twenty four hours of each other and finally sever the links to the greatest ever Pompey side. It is also sad that this should happen with the club at such a low point in their history.
PICKETT, Reginald Arthur
(Inside-forward) Born on Jan. 6th. 1927 in India, due to his father serving in the British Forces.
He served in the Royal Navy, and played non-league football for Maidenhead Utd. and Weymouth where he was spotted by Pompey.
Reg was signed for £750 on Jan. 24th. 1949, aged 22, and he became the understudy to Jimmy Dickinson during the Championship seasons.
He stayed with the club for seven years in and out of the first team. During that time research tells me Reg was resident in the former club house at 18 Carisbrooke Road. He was known to locals as a 'rather noisy neighbour` but was popular too.
He was then transferred to Ipswich Town in July 1957, being joined there by Ray Crawford a year later. He made a further 140 appearances in a highly successful side, leading them as captain to the 2nd.Div.Championship under Alf Ramsey in 1961. After five happy years the late Bobby Robson decided Reg was now too old and he moved on to non-league Stevenage Town - who are now above us in the league - in July 1963.
POMPEY CAREER : 123 league games, 3 league goals, 3 FA Cup games and 1 other first-class game.
STEPHENS, James Findlay
Right back who was signed for a record fee for a full back from Bradford Park Avenue in 1949 of £10,000. Scottish International he played just once in the second Championship season of 1949/50. After leaving the forces he became a regular and would go on to play 100 games for the club.
On retiring he went to play non league football for Yeovil Town - who are now above us in the table!!
Jimmy was another popular with the fans.
With the Trust takeover still on track we the fans are looking to you the fans to help the club in any way you can.
If you have any skill which will help the club and are prepared to volunteer your services then we want to know. The idea is to put together a database of fans who will give their time when needed,
To date we have builders of most trades and others. Even a helicopter maintenance man!!
Pompey will be a community club why not be part of the community? Let me have your details please and I will pass them on.
