'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Beware the returnee

No, I am not referring to a player who had just returned to us - that will follow...

They always say, and you often find, that a player returning to face an old club 'often' has a good game - sometimes having a point to prove!

Well tonight Pompey see Lee Williamson and Johnny Ertl returning to Bramall Lane when we face Sheffield United.

Williamson does not really have anything to prove, as he produced the goods for them whereas Ertl maybe does, as he was released in the summer whereas Williamson was wanted - although I am pretty sure that injuries did not help Ertl during his time with them.

In all honesty out of the two the more impressive, in far less games, for me has been Ertl.

His returning to the side and us going on a decent run was not just a coincidence!

To be honest I expected far more from Williamson, he has not really been 'league one's best player' as he was billed up to be when he arrived, in fact I think his best games have come with him playing at right back! Perhaps if he had been used as a central player instead of a right-sided midfielder it would have helped?

What a time it would be for Williamson to have a barnstormer tonight though eh!

Another former Blade returning to Bramall Lane tonight is Jon Harley - another that has, all in all, been slightly disappointing. He started well but until he moved to midfield recently he was not impressing really.

Can this trio inspire us to something tonight?

Well, hopefully so but lets put things into context really, 'if' we can come back from Yorkshire with anything tonight this should be views as a bonus as we are facing a side that were unlucky not to go up last season and are unbeaten in league one this season so far!

Alas it is not just Sheffield United who need to be mindful or returning players, less we forget that a former Pompey striker - and I would use the term 'striker' loosely when talking about him given what he offered us - is now playing for them.

Dave Kitson is also, on the face of it, doing a decent job for them!

Lets just hope that he has a game more like the ones we remember him having for us, and one less like the positive ones he is seemingly having in the past few weeks with our former Sheffield trio stepping up to the plate...

....and I thought you were refering to Scottie Allan. Former players against their old clubs - Gareth Bale? we all enjoyed that one - plenty more examples too. Point tonight would be nice.
