Appy Says! Shrewsbury reaction

Appy Says! Shrewsbury reaction

Pompey win yet again!

This is becoming something of a habit with us now winning 4 of our last 5 games, including 3 on the spin at Fratton (with the other a draw at MK Dons) following the 3-1 win over Shrewsbury on Saturday afternoon.

Once more it was not 'great' or even that 'pretty' for large spells but we got the job done.

Appy was not at all impressed!

In fact he felt it was out worst performance to date: 'if you want to achieve anything than you have to win when you don't play particularly well - I thought that was probably our worst performance of the season.

'But I was delighted that that they stuck at it, because we would have lost that game five or six weeks ago.'

Those thoughts 'we would have lost that game five or six weeks ago' are becoming his favourites comments, and seem to be a regular speech these days!

Whilst I would agree that it was not always great I would say that we have played worse, much worse in fact, on a few occasions this season so Appy is a little unfair in some respect.

He does know that we must play better at Stevenage on Tuesday, and expects an improvement.

Confidence may be 'high' but 'taking the foot off the gas' is not something he wants to be seeing again if we find ourselves in a comfortable position: 'if we perform like that every week then we will lose matches, so I want to see a vast improvement on Tuesday.

'Shrewsbury were playing well at the end when they had nothing to lose. But people put their bodies on their line and then we got our reward by scoring the third goal.

'The lads are full of confidence, but there's no way we can afford to take our foot off the pedal.'

Another couple of goals from Izale McLeod took his tally to 9 for the season so far, which is a pretty good return when it looked like he might have struggled at this level!

His confidence is growing but he, like the rest of the side, still has a good '25% more' to give according to Appy: 'I'm delighted for Izale. He took a while to get going and now he's doing very well for us.

'A lot of people doubted whether he was up for the job earlier in the season, but it takes time.

'I think we're still some way from where I want us to be. That`s good, because if we've still got 25 per cent in us - which I think we have - then who knows what we can achieve.'

At times we looked really good, if we can find that extra 25% and look as good as we sometimes do for longer periods then I think we can say that safety in league one will be something we can safely achieve - this, lets face it, has always been the objective for this season!

Bring on Stevenage on Tuesday, yep this will be tough but I would not be betting against us keeping our unbeaten run going...

Worst of the season it qas not ; an assured victory it was not either. really Appy needs to be watching some our performances from my seat before he makes that statement, i can think of a number of far worse games but he knows his players and what motivates them better than us . McC is joint top scorer in the league with 8; no?
