*Pompey Sign Fernandes*

Pompey today finally completed the signing of Portuguese International Manuel Fernandes.

The 20-year-old signs initially on loan from Benfica with a view to a permanent £7 million move.

There is however an escape clause in the contract should he fail to recover from the groin injury.

The transfer saga started way back in July, but concerns over the players fitness caused Pompey to put a £10 million deal on hold. In an unusual move he stayed with the club to be treated by our nedical staff, rather than return to Benfica.

At least we have now wrapped up the signing (albeit only initially on loan) so we can hopefully soon see just how good Fernandes is, although he could still be two months away from fitness. If he is half the player we think and expect we're in for a treat!

'Even though his conversion to central midfield was relatively recent, I do not think that, at 19, Makelele was a better player than Manuel Fernandes,' said Jose Mourinho.

'From my vantage point, this kid looks calm, wise, sensible and, according to Tiago, deserves all the luck, because he is a nice person.

'I follow him very carefully. He is very strong defensively, and suited to pressurising teams in their own half.

'Without being tall, he seems to be sufficiently agile to compete in the air. His passing is accurate, he takes good positions near the opposition's box and has a powerful shot," said Jose.

ello rugster. its good to see that we finally got the man but if hes a success i hope we have enough clauses to say the big F off to other clubs (aka chelski) to stop them sniffing around. £7mil seems good value for money if hes as good as everyone says he is. remember this season boys and girls... its gonna be a big'un

WOO HOO finally got our man, hopefully... Sorry I couldn't get a more detailed artile on, this is the best I can do with the time I have at the moment. I'm sure Paul will expand on this when he gets a minute. PLAY UP POMPEY and Fernandes...
pompeyrug
Well not bad that we've managed to knock Benfica down 3, maybe as much as 4 million on what they wanted a few weeks back. He's ours, IF he can prove fitness...
pompeyrug
YES this is more good news, the rumour central (pompey shop ) says he will be ready in about a month, then it will be WOOO HOOO GREAT news. Just been reviewing that you tube vid again, this guy is the dogs, champions league experience, strong runner, nimble feet, great shot, lets just keep him protected from the savages and thug thatchers of this world. if he gets fit 7 mill is a steal i just hope we have some good clauses, might have to tempt my optimism a place or two above 10th. im off back to youtube again

good signing!!! does anyone know anything about a possible deal for Appiah, That bloke is awesome!!
XmirrorboyX
tralk sport said an offer was being made for Appiah by a club assumed to be pompey tonight, they also said MCFC have suspended Thug Thatcher for 6 weeks in an attempt to head off a 3 longer ban by the FA. Preston chairman been on sky saying Nugent going nowhere LoL ..now if that was jacka Storrie id assume he'd be off then.

I think Cole would be a good signing!!!! watching the way we play at the moment anyone up front is going to score! Fernandes is a fantastic (as long as hes fit!) cant wait to see him rip it up! things are looking up boys! lets have some more, that Appiah dude sounds good, didnt see him at the world cup, but I have heard loads of good things!...just to think of this team all fit is a very exciting thought! we should fear no one!

The boy Fernandes certainly looks like a great acquisition! The rumour mill suggests Pompey are also after Stephen Appiah and / or Niko Kranjcar. Kranjcar is a classy player and only 22 but Appiah (25) would be a sensation in the EPL. All three players have good videos at You Tube. If we can sign up a younger forward with speed and a central defender then the squad quality and depth make Europe look like a definite possibility. As a lifer Pompey fan I am ecstatic not least because my son - Liverpool supporter - can no longer “bag” me for supporting “rubbish” teams! BTW: I agree that Noe Pamarot looked a very solid player against Boro!

Fernandes is worth the risk so the get out clause is good PR. Not so sure about Cole although there is something about well travelled players that come to Pompey and do well. Could be the excitement, the crowd or the Southern Riviera !!
pompeygray
Bout time we got him. He will surely be an amazing signing once his injury has subsided. We are looking good boys.

Great news on Fernandes, looking good for Cole too...good work Arry and the lads! From the aforementioned youtube of Fernandes he looks very good indeed, and if Cole is anything he's an out and out goalscorer.
Tantona
as you say Tantona he is an out and out goal scorer so see cole as another second half Toddy really, cant see how we can drop the starting two at the moment given current form. Also it seems to me if we are serious about using midfielders and scoring from everywhere we need Benjani's hard running and Kanu's ball holding ability. Im rather hoping for some good news on Appiah, he laso has an intresting Youtube set....might have to get one for meself,.... fat bloke aving a ball
russellm
Great news on Fernandes and a great deal - sign him fully when he's fully recovered. Well done management team ! The potential signing of Cole proves that Harry's pretty happy with our strike force for now - and will look for a young striker (I think not Nugent) later on. In midfield the two potential signings of Kranjcar and Appiah would be excellent. The only worry would be who to leave out ? At least Harry could gently give his new signings some substitute appearances to begin with.....
StuartM
fernandes move sounds like a sound piece of business from pompey. whether he'll ever play or not remains to be seen. Appiah is likely to sign today as well which will strengthen the midfield further. Andy Cole also looks set to join which is an unlikely but shrewd move. I'd still like to see another striker join.
The Rabbi
About time to aswell, lets hope he puts some good performances in and adjusts to the english game as soon as possible!
Westov
as far as i can see we have 3 1st team goalies (2 of which id be happy starting), a good defence (i think 1-2 more orta do it), midfield is ripped (when appiah signs no more needed) and attack needs 1 young starlet.
pompey pessimist
think i agree pessimist, defence 1st and then 1 or 2 midfielders, the priority being Appiah, whome by the way it has all gone quiet on. But we have built from the back and we should shore up that back line 1st. as for young talent, compared to that Jimmy Grieves, Andy Cole is young.
russellm
Fernandes will be the new D'Alessandro at Pompey get skill on the ball. We just got to get him fit
nelson
Really glad to have finnally got in Fernandes, we all know how good he looks, so I CAN'T wait until he returns to full fitness and shows us all...
pompeyrug
Great move for Pompey. Has a big future ahead of him. Can't wait to play you guys in the league. What with you having our former players and all (Sol, etc) Should be a good game.
