Pompey fans are a pretty special bunch, I know this and you all know this too, but lets face it do we really need a statue to remind us of this?
I appreciate that it was the fans that won the club £30,000 via the Fanpower Stadium competition recently but using this money to create 'a statue in our honour' is, with all due respect to those that thought of this, quite frankly a ridiculous idea!
A statue of a Pompey great such as Jimmy Dickinson I could have agreed with but a statue of the fans, come on...
With other options to spend this 30k on much more worthwhile, worthy and ultimately more beneficial to the club in the long-term I would be really disappointed if this money was eventually spent on this idea.
Giving away tickets to local schools to allow kids, that otherwise would not get anywhere near to getting into Fratton Park, is a wonderful idea!
The next generation of fans is what this club is in desperate need of, pretty much all football clubs are really to be honest, with the amount of youthful fans at most clubs around (who are the future) dwindling all the time due to a number of reasons, primarily the costs involved.
Improving the disabled facilities, another of the options that fans can vote on, is also a much more worthwhile cause and will benefit a number that otherwise could not.
An improvement on facilities already in place will make a huge difference to disabled fans that already visit Fratton, but like I say an improvement on them as well as an upgrade on others would also help home and away to enjoy their football too.
In an ideal world the free tickets and help to disabled would have this money shared between them, although it seems that just one of the three will get the kitty?
Finding a way to make it 'fair' for people to cast their vote, give their opinion and get what they want to happen is always going to be a tough thing, and whilst I know Facebook does reach the masses I also fear that it reaches the masses that you would not want it to!
Surely Pompey fans are not seriously wanting this £30,000 spent on a stature in our honour, which must mean 'our friends down the road' are casting a lot of votes to try and get this to be the case.
With that in mind I am glad that things will be 'closely monitored' with votes validated before a result is announced, with Pompey fans also able to cast their vote via emailing the club.
I guess all we can now do is vote in the final days that you can, voting closes Midnight on Monday, to ensure that free tickets for kids - as this is the one that is most closely challenging the 'statue idea' - proves the eventual winner...
