Pompey Striker Options...

Pompey Striker Options...

Another day goes and we are now down to 6, before the transfer window slams shut. Injury problems are mounting although Mendes should now be back in a couple of weeks.

Harry has said that we need two players in before the transfer window shuts. Mmm.. well if Fernandes is one of them then that means either a left midfielder or a striker. I`m hoping that it doesn`t include Fernandes and we are getting three players in before the window closes.

I think Harry is having a few problems finding a striker and a left midfielder. So tonight I will find Harry some forwards and tomorrow I will find him a left midfielder! I will then email the link to the scouting article to Portsmouth.

Patrick Kluivert

Transfer News on this player- He was linked with Fulham today but that was strongly denied by Chris Coleman. He is almost certain to leave Valencia with the club insisting, "several European clubs are interested."

How Much would he cost?- I don`t honestly know but he only has a year on his contract and big wages have seen him move on a free twice! I`d say about three million and big wages.

Why should we sign him?- He has played in the Premiership before with Newcastle, so Pompey know he knows what the Premiership is all about. At Newcastle he scored 11 goals in all competitions. He scored 109 goals in 181 games, just in the league at Barcelona! In his career he has scored an amazing 166 goals.

Video- Watch Patrick Kluivert in action, click here.

Downside- He isn`t fit by any stretch of the imagination, his club are refusing to play him in matches and he is training on his own in a bid to get fit. Many people have said that he is past it and his best days are behind him.

Fact- He is only 29, yes 29, you thought he was in his late thirties didn`t you!

Should we sign him?- If he is willing to work for Pompey`s cause, sign him up because he has bundles of talent.

Will we sign him?- I doubt it, not even been a rumour yet.

Dave Nugent

Transfer News on this player- Nugent has been linked with loads of clubs this summer; Portsmouth, Bolton, Everton, Watford and Sheffield United to name but a few. The player has said he is happy to stay at Preston, HOWEVER he has refused to sign an extended contract at Preston. (Which currently runs out in 2008) Preston don`t want to sell the player, so a high fee would probably be demanded. He wouldn`t cost Pompey too much in wages though…

How much would he cost?- He would cost between 5 and 7 million pounds but would be seen as an investment for the 21 year old, especially with the prices of English players increasing.

Why should we sign him?- If we don`t sign him someone else will, simple. He has a fantastic record in the Championship and at such a young age is going to become an even better player. You won`t loose money on a class young English player, not these days.

Video- No video

Downside- He would cost a lot of money for someone who isn`t proven in the Premier League. We would want to sign him up on a long contract, maybe four years, this would also include a degree of risk.

Fact- Has scored two goals in four games for Preston so far this season.

Should we sign him?- Yes, we should he is going to be a top player and we need to be the club to take the gamble. Doesn`t really matter what league you are playing in when it comes to finishing, all the goals are the same size, the ball falls at his feet in the box and he`ll finish it.

Will we sign him- I think we will in January but I can`t see Harry taking a risk on this player when we need a proven Premiership scorer, maybe in January when we are comfortable though.

Ahmed Mido

Transfer News on this player- After signing for Tottenham in January of 2006 they decided against signing him on a permanent basis and he returned to Roma. He is not for sale and the player has revealed, two reasonable bids for him, have been rejected. With the club telling him he`s "not on the transfer list."

How much would he cost?- Roma need money but the club don`t want to sell him. 6 million should be enough to change Roma`s mind though.

Why should we sign him? He has played in the premiership before and knows what he needs to do to perform in the league. He only scored three goals in eleven games for Tottenham but never started week in week out. Most Tottenham fans where impressed by Mido. He has a good scoring record at his previous clubs.

Video- Watch this impressive video of Mido, click here.

Downside- He didn`t score as many goals in the Premiership as expected. He also has the odd bit of red mist in his game, which has seen him targeted by the opposition.

Fact- Mido wants to move back to Tottenham

Should we sign him?- Yes, I believe that he would get Portsmouth 15 goals a year without too much difficulty. If you watch the video he scores goals when given a chance in the box, with the right type of delivery from Pompey wingers he would score lots of goals.

Will we sign him- Yes, I recon Mido is the player Harry is chasing or a player that Harry is at least, looking at.

Transfer News- Middlesborough have made clear that Yakubu isn`t for sale at any price and Portsmouth have apparently made an enquiry. The player has never come out and said he is happy at Borough and hasn`t ruled out a return to Pompey. His agent has just said that Yak is happy at Borough. (Ok so I`m looking for something!!)

How much would he cost?- I don`t think Borough would sell him for less than fifteen million pounds. Ok so that`s a lot of money but how much is 20 goals a year worth?

Why should we sign him?- Yakubu scores, ok so he is lazy but he is the only true goal scorer to play for Pompey in the premiership. He is big, strong and quick, which makes him the ideal striker to play in the premiership. Yakubu has also played at Pompey before so he knows what to expect. His best mate Lua Lua has also committed his future to the club.

Video- Watch what Pompey are missing out on, click here.

Downside- He was booed last time he came back to Portsmouth and he can be lazy which frustrates Pompey fans. He would also be bought at a great lose, costing Pompey a large sum of money.

Fact- Yakubu scored 29 goals in 67 games for Pompey in the top flight.

Should we sign him?- As good as Martins and Anelka so yes but not if they demand 15 million pounds! We can get two class strikers for that amount of money and I don`t think we should waste are time trying to persuade Borough to let him go it isn`t going to happen.

Will we sign him?- No, unless he is unhappy at Borough he will stay.

The Last Two

I wouldn`t recommend Lee Trundle as I don`t think he can make the step up. There is no doubt the player has skill though. If Harry did take the gamble for me it would have to be a loan deal with a possible permanent deal. click here to view Lee`s talent.

I do however believe that Pompey scouts should watch Freddy Eastwood of Southend United. (Click to see what Freddy Eastwood looks like) I can`t show you a video of the goals he scores but keep your eye on this player! He has scored 4 goals in 5 games so far this year! Harry get this man in along with Nugent and Pompey will be flying.

Freddy Eastwood is twenty three years old and has said that he wants a move to a bigger side. I think that Portsmouth could do worst than to bring Freddy Eastwood into the club.

Freddy Eastwood began his career as a West Ham United Academy player where he had been a promising youth player. However he was unable to break into the first team at Upton Park and joined Conference side Grays Athletic in the summer of 2003. He scored 37 goals in his first season, prompting attention from a number of professional.

He joined the Shrimpers on 4 October 2004, initially on loan. He made his debut for the club in spectacular style, Eastwood scored the opener after just 7.7 seconds and went on to score two. He joined the Shrimpers on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee in a three-year deal which is thought to include a hefty sell-on fee for Grays.

He finished the 2004-05 season with 24 goals from 42 appearances in all competitions and scored the opening goal in his club's 2-0 defeat of win in the League Two Play-off Final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

He scored Southend United's 2000th League goal when he smashed home the late winner against Blackpool. 2000 goals, he`s 23!!!

Eastwood was joint top scorer with Billy Sharp in League One in 2005-06 with 23 goals.

Harry my recommended targets are Nugent and Eastwood. I believe we could sign Eastwood for three million pounds.

Well that is the end of my striker report it is a chance for you Vital Pompey fans to have your say now! Who would you sign from my scouting report?

I leave you with reassurance. The video below will fill you convince you that we are in for a good season even if we don`t bring in a striker!

Click here to see why we don`t need another striker!

Paul Fisher (going to the pub!)

p.s. left midfielders` tomorrow… bet you can`t wait!

nugent for me

nice review paul! i dont think pompey could afford kluiverts wages, theres a limit of 60k/wk or so and i cant see 'arry wanting kluivert. like you i believe we need some youth for squad building. my 2 would be nugent and mido. i dont know THAT much about nugent but mido looks like a natural scorer. he may not be prolific but if that ball goes in the net as easy as the video was to my eyes then we will have nothing to worry about! as for THAT kanu miss, lol, lets not knock the lad, hes scored 2 goals for us already and i reckon hes got a point to prove. :)

Wouldn't like to see Kluivert particularly, but certainly think Mido could do the job. Nugent and Eastwood both have good potential but probably wouldn't be the immediate answer.....that'd be the gamble. What will Arry do!
25/08/2006 22:43:00
Freddie Eastwood would fit into the Premiership without any trouble what so ever. Cracking striker if i ever saw one.

Id like Mido & Nugent!...still a bit gutted we couldnt get Anelka, i think hes gonna kick butt!
26/08/2006 08:02:00
I think Mido and Kluivert are both loose cannons who could cost a lot of money with very little return. Nugent seems a risk worth taking but doesn't want to come this far south obviously. Eastwood might need to get through this season in the Championship before we know if he'd make it in the Premiership. How about throwing a few more names into the ring? Kris Boyd of Rangers (surely a bid would test rangers resolve/and the players ambition), Marek Mintal of Nuremberg (a slovakian free scoring midfielder who gets 20 goals a season), Martin palermo (have said this before) of boca juniors (big european style centre forward), Rafael Sobis of brazilian club Internacional (currently in the Copa libertadores final/scores for fun). I know a lot of these might not be the most obvious but its clear that with our success rate at signing strikers this summer, we might have to be a little more inventive on the scouting front and look a little further afield?

We've got six so how many more do we need? If we do get one in though, i'd hope it would be a proven premiership (top league) goalscorer.
