Development squad, now I like that!

Development squad, now I like that!

Ok, I know that the priority at the moment is Portsmouth Football Club still being here next season but lets work on the 'assumption' (yep I know that assumption is the mother of all f**k ups!) that there will be eh, as I am confident there will!

For an age I have banged on about the fact that we have missed having a reserve side.

Quite obviously we have not had the numbers to justify this but the 'development squad' that Pompey have planned from next season is music to my ears.

This might not quite be a proper reserve team but it is the next best thing, and would definitely be an improvement on what we have!

Once the youngsters come to the end of their academy stage the next step is reserve football, you must have something to bridge the gap between academy football and 1st team football.

And Pompey has not had anything like this for a couple of years.

Of course some are of an exceptional talent so they bypass this and go straight into the 1st team. Few manage this though so with no reserve football, as such, at Fratton it is like getting to the edge of the cliff with only one way to go, and going this way (forward) means it is the end of the line...

A development squad will enable these players to work together closely and play at least a dozen games as well as being involved with the 1st team squad on occasion, be that training with or actually playing in!

'Development squads' are something that more and more clubs seem to be having these days, they act as that final buffer before a player either sinks or swims in the 1st team and can also, I believe, include senior players that are returning from injury or that need games.

Like I say this move is very much music to my ears and I am sure it will benefit PFC no end in the future as we do have a decent bunch of youngsters, but they can only continue to develop by playing games...

Interesting point; I'm assuming that the plan is based on Chan and Appleton starting next season at the club. Which I think is more likely now given that the Chan has no debenture rumour seems to have grown up. Also I think Appleton may feel that D1 is a more reasonable ask for him as occasionally last season he seemed to be out thought.

Vital Pre-Match - League 2, 27th September

The 2016-17 season continues with the latest round of matches this midweek, which will see us among those having a match in this upcoming schedule with three-points the aim of course.

Tranmere loan for Tollitt

Ahead of the weekend win over Barnet, which probably wouldn't have been a game he was involved in anyway, Ben Tollitt was sent out on loan to Tranmere.

All deserve the plaudits for that performance

I think that's a fair assessment from Cook, some played a little better than others but Barnet was a very good team performance from Pompey even if it wasn't 'really' a 5-1 scoreline.
