It has been confirmed by Paul Jewell that he has held talks with a Pompey player at the weekend about a move to Ipswich.
He would not name the player but it is 'understood' that the player was Joel Ward.
Jewell says that they 'chatted for two hours' and he 'liked what he saw' but he is unsure if he will go to Ipswich, or elsewhere - if anywhere - as he 'isn't short of offers.'
With all due respect to Ward, who is a fine footballer, the 'not short of offers' comments seem more in fitting with Jason Pearce?
That said 'rumours' are that at least two clubs have looked at Ward.
Although it is also 'understood' that Ipswich are no longer in the running to sign Pearce as West Ham and Scum have 'joined the race' to sign him - with it thought that Leeds were close to signing him but wanted him on the cheap!
Who knows eh...
Ward, for me, has been off his game slightly recently so that would explain a lot of things as his mind must be all over the place - whatever happens Thursday cannot come soon enough as whoever stays will know that they are 100%, no two ways about it staying until the summer at least so there will be no more distractions...
If Ward, or Pearce for that matter, are still here come Friday I must admit I would still be slightly surprised but sincerely hope that any deal is really in the best interests of the club as I am not sure what sort of message it sends out if we are desperately still trying to offload players in the dying embers of the loan window in spite of being told that our future was 'secure?'
Clearly the wage bill, future secure or not, still needs to be lowered but lets at least wait until the summer (if possible) as surely a summer deal could be worth at least as much, if not more, to the club as any last minute rushed through deal before the loan window closes could be...
It would appear that my Joel Ward thoughts, at least as far as Ipswich go, are pretty redundant though with it 'reported' that Ward has yet again rejected a move to Portman Road anyway!?
Appy is also confident that Ward, and others, will now stay too - time will tell though...
