Kanu Deal Completed

Pompey have concluded a deal to sign Nwankwo Kanu. The Nigerian, a free agent following his release by West Bromwich Albion after their relegation from the Premiership could (despite being without a club for Pre-Season) to be thrust straight into first team action in the Premiership opener with Blackburn on Saturday due to the stiker shortage at Fratton Park.

30-year-old Kanu, who's unorthodox, sometimes lazy looking approach, although often highly entertaining can often be more frustrating, making him similar to Lomana LuaLua in that respect, has signed a one-year contract.

I think I'd be lying if I said Kanu would have been everyone's first choice pick, but needs must, and with the right players around him, a manager who is renowned for bringing the best out of players and a crowd that are second to none I am sure that the Nigerian International will do a good job for us.

We would have liked a striker who would score at least 15 goals a season and although not the most prolific, his time with West Brom, where he never really enjoyed an extended run in the team if we are fair, and his nightmare spell with Inter aside, where it was found he had a serious heart defect, he has averaged a goal nearly every other game.

An extended run in the side and who knows what might happen for Kanu. Hopefully we still have our 15-goal man in Benjani, if not we can still get one before the end of August!

I am happy we have 2 strikers and a substitute for Saturday who can score goals in the premiership - that's what we need for this week. I trust Harry will sign more before the month is done. We've got great goalscoring midfielders and 2 new defenders who can create and score goals - look out for our set pieces this weekend ! I think we can give Blackburn a great game with the team we have - it's pretty similar to the one that finished last year so well - in my opinion it's improved defensively and in attack it's pretty similar.

im more worried about our defensive set pieces, especially from what i saw in friendlies... still shocking! in traditional pp style i stand by my bet for blackburn to win, although i have 20 on pompey winning the season on handicap, which is a lot of money to give up! so for that fact alone i want pompey to win 11-0, a goal from all 1st team players lol.... ok 1-0 will do

I agree stuart M, bellamy and dickov gone, we are all forgetting that we should have a more secure back four out. seem to be differing reports how Benjani is, i lost radio connecton when the subject came up at the forum. but a start like we finished last season (liverpool excl) and that 10th place could be on.... not at all pessimistic today.

Martins may well be quality, but do we really wanna sign a player who can only be arsed to move to us for the money if no-one else comes a calling? I think Kanu could surprise a few this season and get back to better form (that seemed to be missing last season....especially when putting the ball over the bar from about a yard out!)

LoL agreed tantona, anyway ball over bar from 1 yard out is Benjani's job.... so we have strength in depth in the ball over the bar from 1 yard out position. PPessimist you havent seen Glen,Campbell.. LoL ...ride out yet, yeeeha

Kanu may yet to prove to be an inspired signing, he averaged a goal every other game for Arsenal which is pretty good for any striker. give him the service and he'll score goals and make a few as well. At west Brom he didn't get the service hence his poor scoring record.

Kana is a good striker, he will do well for Pompey. He just needs a decent midfield to play him through which he will have at Pompey. Its great that we beat the deadline for saturday, otherwise poor old toddy would have been playing alone up front. Saturday will be a difficult game especially with Benny Mcarthy and Jason Roberts on top form. I think our new defensive line up will be able to cope with them though as they have alot to prove, being the first game. Play up Pompey.

With our injury curse at it again, kanu has arrived just in time. He could a useful foil for Toddy.
