*Vargas 'Complication' With Deal*

The Vargas deal is now in doubt after complications arose. I received this news from Peru and it was in Spanish, so the following has been adjusted based on translation (only the quotes, the rest is my own work.)

Juan Vargas representatives said today that, 'there is a complication." Carlos Thin the players representative, informed the Colombian public that 'the terms of the agreement and in the middle are being discussed," which suggests to me that a deal is yet to have been agreed with the club, despite the player training with Portsmouth.

The representative of his former club have threatened, 'there were many clubs interested before the agreement with the Portsmouth' and is willing 'to refloat some offerings.' The players former club want any complications tied up today. Although Portsmouth thought that they had already reached a deal with the players club.

The representative of Vargas announced on August 1st that Columbus (his former club) and Portsmouth had arrived at a verbal agreement on the transfer of the player, "although is presumed that still there are discrepancies on the financial terms."

If I have interpreted this correctly the player is now threatening not to play in a friendly for Peru. Below is a direct translation from the story.

"On the other hand, Thin indicated (the players agent) that does not know if the player will join with the Peruvian selection for the friendly game against Panama, that will be celebrated next Wednesday in File."

Portsmouth are apparently angry as they claim a deal has already been agreed for the player. The players representative said, 'the assembly was done at Columbus, I imagine that the club (will) responded to the Peruvian Confederacy of Soccer."

Portsmouth are not expected to increase a bid on their initial agreement with the club. We will wait and see if this story develops?

In other news- Kanu will undergo a medical at Fratton Park about mid day.

Thought something must have been up - it doesn't take 2.5 weeks to get a work permit !

Well I should say, it doesn't take 2 and a half weeks to decline a work permit, thought it can take a while longer to eventually get one after a rejection.....

Lets forget this guy and get Sylvain Distin instead.

we need a left sided player

Vargas it seems is blaming his club and the Peruvian FA for the problem or he wouldnt be going on strike. I hope Im wrong but i think someone in Peru has woken up to our budget & i'm guessing from my time in the south americas it may be to do with the infamous" departure process tax " . It was quite common through out south america. when both clubs were desperate for a deal to go through the local Federation would suddenly demand a percentage wise large one off "seperate payment" to allow the paperwork process. They dont care where it comes from, if the buying club didnt pay it, the selling club had to. Rich South and central american clubs budget for this, often termed "hiccup" but it is fair to assume Pompey wont have and Colon is not a rich club and the player's contract is owned by 3 different groups (2 of which seem to be peruvian linked), at 1.6. mill thier is probably insufficient money in the deal to cover it... when this happens usually the smaller extra payment is made by the richest of the clubs and the fee becomes "undisclosed". The above is of course all speculation in the case of Vargas but even if it were true, and i dont doubt we have the budget to spare, the problem is with all the rumours about Harry could the club take the risk .

dodgy dealings... no suprise there then! but we have wheeler dealer arry. he will negotiate the terms with Peru and in simple arry english "how about you fu*k off and give him for free" *two fingers* he will then continue to say "vargas is a good player, great player, triffic for his age and strong and left sided and as he is not a striker im more than happy to pay 40 million for him... would you like that fivers?" (sorry im in a random mood today)

all a bit dodgy aint it!

yet pp i think we got that, problem here is if we have a little peruvian jobs worth then he would gain a lot by scuppering a deal, thats the way it works. I was in Brazil when Ronaldo left cruzeiro and the rumour was that the "administration taxes" and "charitable donations" were as big as the fee. But for the sake of i balance I have to note the fact that it was thoroughly investigated by the C of Police who found no wrong doing....and also then scrupulously investigated and cleared him self of any conflict of interest as a memeber of the Cruzeiros board.

There seems to be a lot of bollox with this one, may be a good thing he dosen't come.

you may have a point, you have to wonder who is going to come out of the woodwork with an ownership share, perhapse that is why he hasnt been picked up before, shame though i was looking forward to him coming he's a confident little bug*er

If you remember at the beginning of this saga, Vargas said he was too good a player to have a trial with Portsmouth. Well he's now had a couple of weeks training with the team - Harry's learnt if he can understand any of his Harry-English instructions and they've also seen if he can fit in with the squad. If Harry really rates him I bet he pays up as he's pretty cheap, if he thinks he bought a lemon, this will be a great excuse to let him go back!
StuartM
Glad you posted that Stuart M i was pondering the same thing but it seemed far too sensible a comment for me. The other things i was thinking about were, i dont think we've got a lemon cos he's been here a while now, we think from club rumour (and i got from a friend who works at AP) both player and club were looking to sign this week & he's also now been part of the team set up. For the sake of .9 mill more do the club refuse to be black mailed or do we reluctantly accept that with a deadline of thursday for the blackburn game or ten days left in the window that we cant risk letting him go.
