Toast Season 5 #18- The Mighty Magyar

Where have we been? Well perhaps nobody missed us but we are back as we begin our fifth year of Toast - your Sunday morning blog that talks about all things football and in particular Pompey. We tell your stories and try and add a light-hearted touch to help you wake from your slumbers and get your Coffee and Toast down you.

Feel free to let me have your thoughts and stories and I will publish them - it can be your first game (which was very popular a few years ago), trips to away games, getting in for free, anything!! Most of which have been copied by others since we started.

Toast has been absent for a few weeks for many reasons but we are now back, having survived the Eastney tornado unscathed earlier in the week.

Marko the mighty Magyar!

There is now no doubt that Marko Futacs is not green anymore after scoring on his first two starts for Pompey. He has looked to be a great find but Toast asked where did he come from?

Marko may not be twenty two until next month but he certainly could be called a product of European football. Born in the Hungarian capital of Budapest on 22 February 1990, after playing football as a youngster he was signed for Ferencváros but at the age of sixteen he decided to try his luck in France with Nancy.

He started well in Nancy reserves and after two years Werder Bremen came knocking and he signed a two year professional contract in the summer of 2009 with the German club. Once again he impressed in the second string but after a year Marko was loaned to Ingolstadt, a Bavarian club, who were then playing at the second level of the Bundesliga.

Pompey then signed him on a one year deal last summer but he had been limited to a few appearances as a substitute only scoring once in the friendly against Russian side FC Rostov. He has a lot to learn including being a little tougher in challenges but he has great potential without any doubt. Sadly in the past Pompey`s managers have failed to make the best use of young talent available to them and it has been allowed to drift away - Gary O`Neil always being on loan is a good example - but Appy is not like that and will give youth its head.

Back to the start of the article I said Marko is not green anymore any expert of European football will have spotted the play on words as both former clubs Ferencvaros and Werder Bremen play in green!!

Fratton Park

I must admit a new nickname for the Park crossed by ears the other day when I heard it referred to as 'God`s green acre`. Anyone come across that one before? Or what do you like to call the old girl?

Perhaps after the last few seasons we have been through it should be the Theatre of Screams!!

New Owners

Where is your money in the market on this one? Who will it be?

The clever money stays firmly in the pocket but names in the frame the Pozzo family who own Italian Serie A side Udinese. They have a reputation for turning clubs around by unearthing some of the best young talent and selling them for huge sums.

Then there is Brain Howe lifelong Pompey fan and former member of Bad Company. He has been mentioned in the past but appears to have ruled himself out with comments I have picked up during the week.

Who else then other than Columbian drug barons who of course would sail through the Football League Fit and proper persons test. We shall soon know we all hope and hopefully the FPPT will deliver us a trusted owner and the stability we all deserve.

Gary Ablett

All at Vital Pompey were saddened by the news of the passing of Gary Ablett at the age of just forty six. The former Liverpool and Everton defender was a very popular player with his team mates and an underrated player who will be sadly missed by the whole of football.

Sadly of course he is the second forty something Gary to pass away in recent weeks. The thoughts of all Pompey fans go out to the Ablett family.

Battle of Stamford Bridge

As all schoolboys should know the Battle of Stamford Bridge took place in Yorkshire on 25 September 1066 but this afternoon Pompey attempt to break down the hoodoo that has existed since September 1955.

Pompey have a poor record against Chelsea not having won any game since the League Cup tie in 1960 and the last victory at the Bridge was in perhaps unusual circumstances. Chelsea were League Champions for the first and only time pre Premier League. Pompey had not started the season well with only one win in five, the final score was Chelsea 1 Pompey 5.

The goals were scored by Peter Harris 2, Derek Rees 2 and Jackie Henderson - VP friend Pat Neal played one of his few Pompey games that day. That was eighteen games ago and Pompey have only drawn six of those matches, twice letting in seven goals!

Nice Beaver

Dan Thompson has been signed from Hampton and Richmond Borough (aka The Beavers) after a successful trail. He has immediately been loaned to Havant and Waterlooville who just happen to be in the same league as the Beavers.

The fee will be settled by Pompey sending a strong team including Dan to the Hampton for a pre season friendly next summer. He scored for the academy side on his debut at Ipswich yesterday.

Confused? I expect you are but although on loan to the Hawks Dan will also play occasionally for the Academy side and I also gather that the differences between Pompey and the Beavers have been settled.

Welcome back Dave - you've been missed. Just wished you were coming back to break the news as to who our new owner is. I haven't been bothered up to now, but the suspense is starting to kill me.
