Well this, Pompey player of 2011, is something that we here at Vital Pompey Towers have been trying to gage from Pompey fans for the past week or so.
In a recent forum thread (here) we were asking for some names, ideally with a reasoning to back this up, as to who we could put down as candidates as the player of 2011 for Pompey.
Well, this is what was said: 'pompeyhussler: Jason Pearce has to be mine come in on a small fee to be a squad player and has been in every game since. He is so consistent and I think can go on to make 100s of appearances for the club and be a future captain.
robertpog: Joel Ward Pompey born and bred and getting better all the time.
He also has been here all year
Pompeytim: Lawrence has been ordinary of late, but last season was the stand out man. Most of those good performances were in 2010 though.
I think Mullins always does the unglamorous things & rarely gets much credit. He is my unsung hero.
PompNut: Pearce and Henderson are close but considering this is for the whole of 2011 I have to go for....
.....Drum Roll......
.....easy choice....
..... GREG HALFORD!!!!
The unsung hero!
pompeyrug: petty tough call really as we are considering the WHOLE of 2011 aren't we...
A few could argue the tail end of 2010/11 and other the start of 2011/12 but is there 'really' anyone that can cross both areas?!
Have this feeling it 'might' end up with someone who had a good end of last season or a good start to this?
Joel Ward has been in and out more this season but has had his moments so i would say him for 2011 tbh...
mslorna48: Very few have done well for us throughout 2011.
Halford has played all year, rarely had a poor game, so Halford for me.
PompeyJake: I would have to say either Pearce or Halford. There was a great stat before the Scum game that we have actually conceded less than they have. Seeing they are top, I think that tells us where the strength in our team is. I'm going to go with Halford.
PompeyFcMad: Think for me its a choice between, Greg Halford, Joel Ward and Jason Pearce.
But the one I'm going to pick is...
Greg Halford!
He has played so well this year for us and i can't really recall him making a mistake or having a poor game.
PompeyFrippy: Gotta be Halford for me. I was delighted when he signed permanently and is a fantastic all round player who rarely puts a foot wrong, and adds so much to our game. His heading is fantastic, and he also strikes a mean free kick. Not to mention his throws.
eastneydave: How about Mr Consistency - Hayden Mullins?
Jimsmithswig: rather hard to say as it covers 2 seasons and who was good 2nd half last season aint so this and Vicky Versa, but my vote would be for Muggins, unsung etc
MickTait: Full year that rules out all bar about 8 players from last season
Ward for me cause he is local and scored 'that' goal, otherwise Halford.
tracyc: Definitely Pearce and Ward are in consideration, and Kitson certainly is not!
What about Reg & Chuck though - both goalscorers - at least the best we have it seems.
Two players I would love to vote for, but can't really are Benji and Erik the Viking.
So, there we have it!
Enough speaking I think so we can now put forward the candidates, they are:
Greg Halford
Hayden Mullins
David 'Chuck' Norris
Jason Pearce
Luke 'Reg' Varney
Joel Ward
I think all have a fair enough shout, maybe one that I would question slightly would be Chuck but hey ho - I am sure that votes with prove a fair reflection of things to be honest.
Now all that is required for you to do is to cast your vote, again you can also leave some thoughts but votes are the most important thing to this poll.
PLEASE NOTE: This is being conducted in the forum, in order to vote on this you have to login on that side of Vital Pompey as you cannot vote otherwise - you can also vote only once which is a good thing and makes for a fairer poll!
