'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Reflecting on Watford win

About 6-weeks ago Appy took over as Pompey manager, his first game was away at Watford and we were beaten 2-0!

Not only were we beaten but we were embarrassed in our performance.

To say it was poor would be an understatement...

Today though we were very good with the players answering Appy's call to get the win: 'I took the defeat at Watford in my first game in charge really personally. When the game finished I looked to see when the next fixture against Watford was.

'That's nothing to do with Watford, it's just that I didn't like the defeat there and the way we played.

'I reminded the players of that before the game. I told them how badly I wanted us to win, and I think the players responded by showing the same spirit and attitude.

'I thought we started really well and got them on the back foot, but in the second half we stepped up another few gears again.'

He rates this as our best performance, well certainly at home anyway - and I would agree - with a 2-0 win not doing us justice: 'we created enough chances to win three games, and I think two goals probably flattered Watford.

'I really enjoyed our performance at Burnley, but this was definitely our best one at home since I've been here.

'We dominated the game. Stephen (Henderson) had to make a couple of saves, but they were straight down his throat.'

So, as poor as we were at Watford in his first game as our manager we were good today, especially in the 2nd half.

Marko Futacs again got on the scoresheet with Hayden Mullins, a good finish after a little fortune following a wild swipe with his initial effort, adding the second.

The one disappointment, and Appy knows it, was that we did not score more as we easily could have: 'I could quite easily have let Marko go out on loan, but he's got a talent. We've been working very hard with him and I think he's shown again that's he's a finisher.

'He's got his goal, hit the bar and been very difficult to deal with.

'But I've not seen a goal disallowed as badly as Liam's. He was at least five yards onside. It was embarrassing.'

Next up Chelski next weekend in the FA cup.

We go there with little too lose so never say never - if ever there was a time, and an 'outside chance', to get a result this is it...
