Pompey Host Former European Champs

This evening will see former European Champions Porto come to Fratton Park for our one and only home pre-season friendly before the Premiership kick`s off a week on Saturday.

Following friendlies with Yeovil, Dorchester, Havant & Waterloovile amongst others the visit to Fratton by Porto, winners of the European Cup under current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will almost certainly (with all due to respect to previous opponents) be the one most will have been most looking forward to.

With the exception of the injured Lomana LuaLua Harry Redknapp should have a full strength squad to select from for a match against the type of opponent many will hope Pompey can face regularly in European competitions in the future.

A full match report, for the game that kicks off at 19:45 (possibly to see Sol Campbell make a Pompey debut?) will be posted late Thursday night once I return from work.

Why don't we play more friendlies against teams that will test us properly? I like to see Pompey helping out local clubs such as Havant and Bournemouth but does it really do the players any good to play such teams? I would like to see them play a couple of games at least against stiffer opposition as this will surely help players attitude which is often questionable in pre season friendlies, not to mention their quest for full match fitness.

SteveC is yet another posing the same ******* good question, oxford united of the conference played higher quality opponents than us. and for the first 10 minutes of the game if we are to be honest they were quicker to the ball, ...they ccouldnt keep it at all, but, their up for it attitude was evident. should have played Porto or equivalent last friday instead

ive got a fiver on porto tonight. cant see us scoring and similar performance to inter milan last year i can see porto winning 1,2-0

It all rather depends which Pompey turns up. The one that played with the attitude that they played Havant with will be beaten out of sight. The one that finished the end of last season would fare much better. Trouble is with Pompey you have no clue as to which one will turn up.

i was there at the havant game, i stopped watching after 75 mins coz i was talkin to a friend on the mobile! sunday league does better entertainment than that! to all intents and purposes i hope the team show what displays we can look forward to next season. my name pompey pessimist is that im always pessimistic in my betting FOR my team, but almost every time i do bet against pompey they win. so dont thank me too much for keeping pompey up last season, i lost about £100 on that! hahaha

sad to say i have been at every one of the pre seasons culminating in the a trip to oxford and the most dire performance since our defeat away at birmingham. Inter really turned on the class against us last year but i dint think this Porto can. We can put out the team that finished the last season excl Priskey (i think it was an error to ley him go), so for once the performance IS the thing that counts. The fact that this is pompey's last and ONLY worthwhile pre season game says a lot about how much work has still to be done at the club.

i shall be there tonight but before that the only pre season game i've seen was the Havant debacle. I can handle Pompey losing games what i can't handle is a total lack of passion and commitment. If people pay to watch you the very least you can do is give your best. I'm inclined to agree with Russellm that letting Priske go was a mistake especially as he has only been replaced with a loan signing.

Yes very nice, but whose going remember this game once the season starts. If we get excited about a pre-season friendly with Porto, imagine if we played them in the UEFA cup. No that would be exciting.

cheers lincspfcfan, won my bet then :)
pompey pessimist
No probs. DON'T have the same bet v Blackburn !!!! lol
lincspfcfan
pompey pessimist i did the brieferst of postings on what i watched under the pompey narrowly beaten title. in case your fingers were burning
russellm
lincspfcfan, i was going to do an asian handicap on pompey, but the pessimism sank in and i bet on 1X2 blackburn. now, knowing my luck i will lose the bet and it will be a draw which is doubly not good! if you look at stats (and run the bible from it) then you will see that in the last 10 matches between the two teams pompey have only one ONCE, blackburn have won FOUR and there have been FIVE draws. if you take just the prem then it doesnt really get much better, pompey have never won. ive only but a small stake on it because i think pompey's team is obviously "slightly" better, but we always start the season pretty rubbish so i wouldnt be suprised if we gave a penalty away or something stupid like that. lol
pompey pessimist
We are not yer ready for the season but the difference between blackburn and us last season was Bellamy, we might just win this one.
russellm
yeh odds are stacked 5050 on this one russ! 2.50 for pompey win, 2.80 on blackburn win. i have to say ill be biting whats left of my nails on that one as i wont be at the match!
pompey pessimist
sunning myself in spain at present. Portuguese Tv showed the Pompey v Porto match live. Thought we looked very average. Terrible Primus own goal.
