Pompey "The Poor Man`s Chelsea?"

Today`s News of the World made the claim "are Portsmouth the poor man`s Chelsea?" Are these views based purely on the fact that a Russian owns us both and that is where the similarities end?

Is the "poor man`s" claim because our Russian is a mere Millionaire as opposed to Chelsea`s Abromovich`s Billionaire status or are they implying Pompey are just hoping to throw money around at anyone as many would claim Chelsea do? (This is not necessarily my opinion.)

With our lack of signings to date (despite our reported efforts) we are seemingly more like a poor man`s poor man but being labelled a poor man`s Chelsea will quite happily suit me.

The same paper would claim Sol Campbell has agreed a £40,000 per week deal. We will offer Spurs £2 million for Danny Murphy and £4 million would see Sylvain Distin arrive (didn`t he say no in the week!) and a further £2 million David James…

Let the poor man`s Chelsea revolution begin!

I know the image is Milan, but I'm going for the "cool" man's look...
pompeyrug
What's more upsetting was that I heard a rumour somewhere we'd sign no fewer than SEVEN players last week!! SEVEN!!! Are we the poor man's Chelski? Let's hope that we don't attract the same number of glory bois when the big players do start signing anyway....
Tantona
Pompeyrug - I like the use of the 'Mr Cool' image of Milan! On the claims made re potential signings, anyone could write the cr*p served up by papers so clearly in the know?! I'm confident that on the basis of his recent activity in the transfer market, Harry is not spraying money in all directions to secure targets whatever the cost and will spend the funds at his disposal wisely. Would be nice to see Sol sign up soon though - he must know it makes sense.

Throw enough mud & maybe some may stick is the rule with paper talk. In our case throw buckets of the stuff & still a clean wall. As for any links with Chelsea must be taken in a positive light. A few years ago it was there pensioners that were more likely to be playing for us.
storagematt
It's crazy with the papers isn't it, the news of the world says Campbell will sign for us having agreed terms another says he's agreed them with Newcastle! I'm not saying that I agreed with the "gossip" surrounding them, if I'm honest can't see any of the 4 coming off, just thought it would be funny to throw in what else that paper said...
pompeyrug
You are right, it makes amusing reading whilst there's little real news of substance to keep us occupied.
pietro
Stuart Pearce is confirming a possible Pompey interest so maybe a move for him will come this week, this wont be to everyone's amusement. I'd rather at least one defender (CD) and a forward arrived first
pompeyrug
From the perspective that we are trying to buy lots of first team players from other premiership clubs we are a bit like Chelsea, but yes we are a bit of a "poor man" when it comes to actually succeeding !
StuartM
Why do people even bother with speculation (writing or reading it)? It's all bollócks until its on the official site. TBH, apart from work, thats half the reason i'm not on the pompey site much lately. Fed up with logging on just to read ponderous and uninformed dross, conjecture and rank bad journalism.
FEn_100
Don't leave us FEN your input is always appreciated even if it is controversial at times. I have always enjoyed your banter and am only saddened by your hopefully temporary abstinence.

I'd rather pompeyrug take off for awhile! ;-)

Fen-100 another bit of rumour and speculation bulloks for you, at 11:20 this morning sky news said that Sol Campbell was already at Fratton Park.and will be taking a medical at Portsmouth this afternoon. of course it could just the lure of the local Pompey mineral water and Harry's bare bones speaches.
russellm
Sol Campell=donkey
mcguirk
I'd happily have a "donkey" like Sol Campbell playing in Pompey's back four... HOPEFULLY the deal can be wrapped up today? All the mineral water he could want is a clause in the contract pompey are stalling over ;)
pompeyrug
Well long as your confident with campbell at CB + calamity james in goal..
mcguirk
I'd be more than confident with Campbell at the back... If it was up to me then I probably wouldn't have James in goal, but if we get him I'll be behind him as I am any other Pompey player. If he wasn't doing the business I'd hope 'arry would rop him, as he would/should anyone else...
pompeyrug
mcguirk, i think most pompey supporters (making an assumption here as you are on this site) agree that we need an organiser in our defence and your "donkey" is regarded as one of the best in this country if not Europe, if he had not had his off the field problems we would probably not get him, but he did & we have, anyway great footballers think ahead so the physical is not so much an issue. how many games did we lose through defensive stupidity last season? i can think of at least 6. my concern about calamity coming here is what will Ashdown do, our manager does not rate him as much as the rest of us.
russellm
A donkey off blackpool beach would be able to defend better than some of our defence last year.
FEn_100
without speculation/rumors wouldnt pre season be fun lol
green giant 12
Thats not fair on Blackpool Donkey's FEn LOL.
nelson
dont worry pompey, you cant attract any decent players. Campbell will probably change his mind and whilst you all say hes a donkey, he's a hell of a lot better than what is already at your club. Relegation, does that word sound familiar?
groseyboy
Relegation isn't a feeling that I've had to go through much in my Pompey lifetime (I am only 26 though!) I must admit so no it doesn't sound familiar really!!! The talk of us being involved in relegation all too familiar but not this year. I can ASSURE you that even if we can't add Sol or similar quality at least 3 more teams are worse than us...
