'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A familiar face to follow Appleton?

With Pompey preparing to name Michael Appleton as our new manager, and he is 'expected to be unveiled as new manager by the weekend', it is not just he that could be coming to Fratton.

A familiar face, and former player, could follow him from West Brom according to The Mail?

Dean Kiely is goalkeeping coach at West Brom and is 'reported' that he will return to PFC as part of Appleton's coaching set-up, not that there are any direct - or even indirect - quotes to back this up.

In many ways I would be surprised if Kiely did return to Fratton as he hardly left on good terms, having plenty of bad words about the club and the way he was treated after spending a season with us, losing his place when 'Hollywood keeper' David James arrived in his place.

'If' there is any truth to this what sort of role this would be for him is not clear?

With John Keeley already here as the goalkeeping coach would we really move him aside - therefore having to compensate him as well as compensate West Brom for Kiely too, added to the compensation payout for Appleton as well?

Whatever happens I do hope, and would probably expect, Guy Whittingham to remain as part of the coaching set-up.

Although I am still not entirely convinced that Stuart Gray will stay though, not that I would be against this at all as you cannot help but think that Appleton could do with as much experience around him as he can get.

One thing that I would certainly hope to see us benefit from would be the loaning of a player or two from The Baggies down the line...
