Appleton in Lawro out?

Appleton in Lawro out?

Nope, the 'imminent' arrival of would be new manager Michael Appleton is not linked with the 'possible' departure of Liam Lawrence, these just happen to be the 'headlines' today in the Pompey world...

Appleton has been 'close' for a few days now and is now said to be 'on the verge' of becoming our new manager - this, by all accounts, really is very close to being a done deal if it is not already.

I just wish it could be done and dusted and announced now.

Few, I would guess, would be surprised to see Steve Cotterill return to Pompey in the New Year to try and sign at least one player from us, right?

The Express today says that 'Steve Cotterill wants to raid old club Portsmouth in a £1.5million swoop for midfielder Liam Lawrence in the new year.'

Well, and I might be wrong, but I have to say that if Forest offered us £1.5m for him I think we should take it - not only would we get decent money but we would also remove a wage circa £20,000 off the wage bill too!

Problem is I am not convinced that Forest would...

A) Pay that sort of money for Lawro
B) Pay him those sort of wages

...so, as things stand I am not convinced this would happen, that is not to say that I do not think that Cotterill would not want it to happen or Lawro would not be keen on making such a move.

Lets just see what the New Year brings first though, and in those months between what the new manager makes of Lawro, how they get on and just how much of a 1st team regular he feels he should be?

Re Lawrence I agree with you Rug. Although some on here rate him I don't think he's been that good for the money paid.

moving on lawro might just enable us to bring in 2 bodies and as much as lawro gives it 100% every game i am not sure we could pass up the opportunity of making such a thing possible - especially given the wages that he is on...
problem is those said wages, and a £1.5m, are too rich for forest i would think!

I don't think Forest even have £1.5m to spend on players. Wasn't Cotterill told there would be no money to spend when he took over? That was part of the reason they wanted him, working on a tight budget and working on loans, rather than spending money.

I thune - still thons Lawrence shouldn't be captain; he plays for his own glory not the result and he gets too involved in his own problems and can't read the game. My vote would probably go to Norris, Mullins or on recent performances Tal Ben Haim - and I never thought I'd be typing that anywhere.

I think we have seen the best of this player, injury prone and we need pace, pace and more pace in the team. He has gone the way of Herman...

An unexpected visitor

Pompey's Burgess was clearly at a loose end when the game at Crawley was postponed. That much was initially obviously with the level of desire to be involved in footie later revealed.

Cook - no need for a prolific marksman

Cook has said Pompey's lack of a 25 goal striker - I still think we have one - isn't going to impact on our promotion chances. I can see both sides of Cookie's opinion here to be fair.
