Lawro out of Ireland squad

Having missed the Forest game through injury it will hardly come as a shock that Liam Lawrence has withdrawn from the Ireland squad.

Lawro was named in the squad to face Estonia but after being assessed by medical staff he has been forced out of their Euro 2012 play-off.

Guy Whittingham, as he told The News, always knew it was 'highly unlikely' he would be fit anyway: 'Liam wasn't bad. He went away with Ireland and whether he is fit or not was down to them.

'It was probably about 70/30 against as to whether he played. It would have been too much of a risk for us to play him against Forest.'

He now has a couple of weeks to rest up and get himself fit for the game at Watford on Saturday week.

Although will he get back into the starting 11 under a new manager, which I suspect we will have by then?

If he does will it still be as captain as well?

Speaking of 'the new manager' WOTS has it that Michael Appleton's appointment could be 'tied up today; seems David Lampitt and CSI are being totally scrupulous in all they do.'

Not offence to Lawrence, but i don't see why he was picked in the first place. Hasn't been near as good as he was last season.

I agree, I think by end of Jan 12 he won't be in the Pompey squad; plays for himself not his team.
