'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Driscoll to get the nod?

So, could sky sports, and what they 'understand', be proven right again in quick succession as far as Pompey go?

They are pretty sure that Sean O'Driscoll will be named as our next manager.

I cannot sit here and lie, in all honesty I do not find this that 'inspiring' or 'exciting' but perhaps expectations of just who we might have got have perhaps gone a little too high in recent times.

Arguably for the first time questions are asked of CSI, and I say this with the greatest of respect to them and O'Driscoll, but what level of 'ambition' would this appointment show really?

For me it suggests that we are content to be a championship side battling to stay at such a level...

Then again maybe that is really what we are at this stage and given such a tough couple of years we should start to realise this a little more?

Conversations that I have had though leave us thinking, assuming O'Driscoll is indeed confirmed, that we approached for another manager - someone like Eddie Howe - but got knocked back and then, again with respect, O'Driscoll he has proven the alternative.

If he was our first choice, given that he has been on the unemployment line anyway, why did we not appoint him sooner?

Whatever though once this is confirmed, if it is, O'Driscoll will of course get my full backing and support - what should be a near certainty is that we will play some attractive football, as that is his way...

he was the first man i thought of even before SC went and said so on this site..Rug WHY are you so against him...he did wonders at AFCB and DRFC(until injuries hit hard)..he plays attractive poassing football..has an eye for a player and can work within a budget...I am disapointed too when the likes of OGS and EH were named as real potential managers...but they both seem to have knocked us back...Championship..well thats where we are and thats about our status..no ground..no training set up..no reserves...less tha 15000 home gates...If SOD is appointed i think that by may we will all be saying that it was a good appointment..because we will beat scum 4-1 at WEMBErleee in the play off final..MARK MY WORDS

Hmm this is a man that has only managed league 1 players Will be interesting how he manages the likes of Rocha, TBHaim, Lawrence, Erik, Varney and Kitson.

I'll support him, he was poorly treated by his last lot , would've prefferrd OGS or Mark Robbins but the decision has been made - so ill support him.

It does rile me when I read things about O'Driscoll only managing 'little Donny, lack of ambition by your club' managing League One players'. Forgive me if I am wrong but haven't Doncaster been in the championship for three seasons? Punching well above their weight on one of the smallest budgets in the division. In his first two seasons they had very respectable finishes of 14th and 12th and looked well set to beat that last season until a massive injury list cost them. He never seemed to recover this season and a fresh start will work wonders for him. Forgive me if I am wrong but aren't Portsmouth now a struggling championship side, who have a small squad and small budget? Am I not wrong in believing that your last four or five appointments have done very little, most of them so called bigger names than O'Driscoll. As daft as it is, there was the same things being said when he joined Doncaster. Sean Who?, he's only managed Bournemouth! etc..etc... He struggled in his first few months as he got his footballing philosophy over. He then won Doncaster their first domestic trophy in their history and helped them back into the second tier of English football in fifty years. If he does take over you will have to be patient but I think he will succeed. You will enjoy what he brings. A good footballing side who are a pleasure to watch rather than 'hoof it' football. Give him a chance, he will keep you up this season and you will move onwards and upwards after that.

If "SOD" is appointed, what can you do but give the guy a chance. As Penton mentions above, who? regarding Adkins and the Scum. He's got to be better than 'hoof it in the second half' Cotterill. If he plays flowing, fast football...let's get going.

If S O'D is the man, we will embrace him, people are looking for a big name to attract players, short memories comes to mind, I for one would welcome a boss who gets the players playing ground football, we have players underacheiving at the moment, Lawrence, Huseklepp and Norris seem like midfielders that should stick to footballing principles, Mullins can do the donkey work in midfield, Halford and Rocha can pass it from the back.

Donny Ed cheers mate for that I ve seen AFCB post's in the past saying simular positive things..I am a supporter of SO'D as new boss as stated all over this site fo weeks.. But think of this..When HR was here...Pompey were never in the news..It was HR. Hr wins promotion..HR beats Utd..HR goes to wembley...it woukd be the same with any other "Big name"..Pompey gets diminished...look at Paul Ince when he was at MK dons or Macclesfield..the clubs was neevr mentioned in the press only Ince.. "Noisey" O'Driscoll is as his old nickname indicates is a quiet man..and it will be Pompey's name not his in the papers and on Sky...because he is boring to the general public,,,Great news for us...anyway just because SKY are led to believe,,does'nt mean they KNOW..so with CSI I would keep my opions open...

OGS would have been nice (and I suppose may still happen) but he has just won the league with Molde and his long term ambition is to manage Man Utd. He probably wants to gain managerial experience from taking them into Champions League doesn't he? Anyway I am sure whoever gets the job will get full backing from the fans on match day at least. If we start to play attractive football, who knows, maybe one or two more fans will be tempted to part with their hard earned and boost the gates!

If this is true and he is our next manager of course he will get my full support as did SC did but can't help but feel a bit disappointed about the whole thing. Out of all the managers we've been linked with he's got 1 of, if not the lowest win ratio with 36.2% and even if he does play 'nice' football you need to be getting results at the same time imo otherwise your gonna end up getting sacked..

That 40' Statue of HR has already been built......it resides in a little 2 up 2 down on Sandbanks !! Hey, if we can't get OGS or EH or then SOD will do me, as certainly better than the McGhees, Boothroyds,Dowies of the footballing gravy train!! at least they have reasonable TLA's :-) PUP

in many ways o'driscoll is a level par appointment on terms with cotts, the difference being i have LITTLE doubt that o'driscoll will have us playing better football than cotts did, and would - and no i do not think cotts would have made it any better...
with o'driscoll, or had we stuck with cotts, i cannot see us pushing for promotion anytime soon - tbh i am happy to remain a nopower side, something sits alittle more comfortably with me when we are but financially we are going to struggle, and when the parachute payments stop we are gonna (potentially) be *****ed, especially if we can only bring 10,000-15,000 maximum through the games, if we are lucky!
i cannot say the idea of o'driscoll has me leaping for joy - does compared to several other names mind! - and it is not exactly the 'statement of intent' i thought that CSI would be looking to make but as i have said i have little doubt that he will have us playing some 'attractive football' and for the money i pay i know that this is something that i would, and DO, want...
if/when confirmed then he will of course get my full support and backing - maybe, just maybe he will surprise a fair few of us!
