Viafara Makes Move along the Coast

John Viafara has become the latest Pompey player to switch allegiance by make the short trip along the coast to deadly rivals Southampton for an undisclosed fee.

Columbian International Viafara, 27, has signed a three-year deal with George Burley`s Championship side.

Viafara arrived at Fratton under former Manager Alain Perrin in the summer of 2005 for £800,000 with a reputation as being a tough tackling Midfielder with lots of power and stamina. He immediately got into Perrin`s starting XI, scoring his first and only goal for the club in his fifth game away to Manchester City in late August 2005. Harry Redknapp's re-arrival saw him along with many others swiftly dropped.

Upon the opening of the January transfer window he was loaned out the Spanish Primera Division side Real Sociedad who subsequently decided against making the deal permanent. In 11 outings for the Spanish side he was red carded twice.

With his chances at Pompey very limited it was only matter of time before he was shipped out again but this time on a permanent basis as proves the case.

He came to the club saying he wanted to get them into the Champions League, but he'll not be around now when this happens will he! I liked the look of him when I first saw him, but I never saw him that much so can't really judge too much. Redknapp clearly doesn't rate him, but is this another case of not liking him as he wasn't one of his buys? What do you all think?
pompeyrug
Its all very well harry getting rid of players he didnt sign but it'd be helpful for pompey if he could attract some new ones.
mcguirk
Considering how long it took Benjani to become usefull let alone score a goal i think pompeyrug, you have it spot on , It's a bit like one of those east european style purges. I saw Viafara pre season and saw him once or twice in the reserves at west leigh, he seemed ok to me & frequently the best of the bunch, Like Priske he seems to be another one that didnt get much of a chance.
russellm
ah but mcguirk you have missed the very cunning plan, you see we are going to sign Vargas and if you have visited his website you will see that he thinks he is as good as at least three players on his own! so we have acheived a very cunning two man salary saving.
russellm
Some times he impressed me with his will to challenge players, & he could put in a decent tackle. He played in our 3-1 loss to Spurs when Harry came back & had a great game, yet still im not sure if he is that good?? should have charged the scummers a Mil though!

We don't have any more pre Redknapp signings in the squad that he'd not want do we? Lets just hope he doesn't come back to haunt us. I'd have maybe liked him to have been given a chance, but there you go. At the end of the day it isn't like we have a massive squad like we did a few years back, even though most of that massive squad was s**te and not wanted but we ******** off load them...

If Viafara was any good we would off kept him. If he was making the grade he would of been in the team, he wasn't premiership quality which is why a little crappy team down the road have paid £750000 too much in my opinion. Let them have our cast off's Fuller, McQuashie and now Viafara all crap and not good enough for the premiership. If we want players of that quality then we will be religated.

He wasn't a bad player, it's just this his distribution was terrible. Certainly the lack of English can't have helped his cause either.

Could be a good buy for the scummers. Burley isn't daft & sadly he is building a good team. They have attracted some useful players this summer & shelled out 6-7 million. They have got a lot of the players they went for. I hate to say it but they will have a good season. Not too good I hope.

I think scum will have a VERY good season I'm afraid to say. If they don't at least make the play-off's I'd be surprised. Viafara could well prove to be a very good signing for them I just pray that he won't come back and haunt us...
pompeyrug
I hope they won't come back to haunt us. I'm loving the 'no derbies' season again, long may it continue. On the topic of Derby, well done it getting a last minute draw.
storagematt
Not even VIAGRA could lift Scummers.
pompeygray
watched the Derby v Scum game with interest yesterday (well done Peschisolido !!) and Viafara performed as usual, bags of effort, but no quality, especially in front of goal. £750,000 bonus to Pompey in my opinion.
lincspfcfan
best colombian midfielder ever to play at Fratton. in fact he was the only one....
The Rabbi
I liked what i saw of Viafara he played with commitment. I think Harry's big problem with him was that he didn't speak a lot of english.
