'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McGhee anyone?

The News today has confirmed that another name has 'thrown his hat into the ring' to become the next manager at Fratton.

Mark McGhee is the man in question.

The difference today is that unlike previous names that they 'understand' are interested in the job they have some quotes from him to back this up.

His 'representative' has made it known to Pompey that he is 'interested in the job' here: 'on Saturday I was not under any invite from Portsmouth. I have not had any direct communication with the club other than through my representative.

'Although, as well as scouting, I also wanted to watch the game and see what it all looked like.'

He was apparently in the directors box at the weekend, although as he said above he was not 'invited' by the club, he was scouting for Scotland manager Craig Levein - his, McGhee not Levein, name is now in the hat though...

McGhee, with plenty of experience North and South of the border, has been out of work since leaving Aberdeen pushing on for a year ago but he thinks he has all the qualities that are needed to take the job at Fratton: 'I have been out long enough now. I'm looking to go back in and Portsmouth certainly is something that really interests me.

'I am a football coach, a tracksuit manager, who is used to working with tight budgets.

'At Motherwell I got us into Europe on no budget. That is as good as a promotion in Scotland.

'For me, everything about Portsmouth is right. And it is a level I know really well having achieved plenty at before.'

In all honesty McGhee is not really a name, despite his experience and a decent track record, that 'excites me' although I guess we could do a lot worse.

Do I think that McGhee will get the job though?

In all honesty I have no idea, what I can pretty safely say though it that he has as good a chance as any at this point in time!

A couple of names that will not be in the running though, again according to what The News 'understands', are Billy Davies and Steve McClaren as neither have applied.

So, what do we reckon guys, Mark McGhee for the Pompey job - would you like this?

Share your thoughts below and we can discuss what we think of this option...

Can't stand him! I'll always think of him as a Steve Bruce figure, think they are better than what they are and walk away if a better offer comes along

Well, not for us then! Gotta say I agree but what do I know? All I can say is that he doesnt excite me or inspire me - dour is the word, but did ok at Wolves - years ago now. Cmon, tempt me with one from left field!

The only McGhee I am aware of was Tommy, always out of breath and supporting himself on a goalpost when a corner was about to be taken. Doubt if anyone out there knows what I am talking about!!!

I sense a mixture of opinions here! Some people are saying "no" and some are saying "Please, please no."

From the limited exposure we have had from the new owners, I would say that they seem to be quite astute, that would rule out Mc Ghee straightwaway. They wouldn't invest and then appoint a no hoper like him. A canny pair of guys, who with Lampitts help I think will surprise us all.You gotta have faith!!
Mike1954
lets hope so Mike, think it would be 'disappointing' - with all due respect to mghee and the like - if that is what we ended up with, even when you look at things in a 'realistic' way...
pompeyrug
We're better off "sans" managers if they are average or below. What's the point...
