Pompey eyeing up England Goalkeeper

Pompey eyeing up England Goalkeeper

With Jamie Ashdown currently injured and Pompey already looking for another Goalkeeper Harry Redknapp could make a move for England International David James.

With the Premiership season just over two weeks away, with the news of Ashdown`s injury during the week Pompey`s need for a third 'keeper has increased and a move for 35-year-old James is interesting Redknapp.

"We need another keeper and David is a very good player. He has been England's number one and is proven in The Premiership," Redknapp said speaking in Thursday`s Daily Mirror.

He went on to add,

'He is someone I would like to bring here.'

James has not always been portrayed in the kindest of ways but his quality and ability at the very highest level can`t be questioned. His possible arrival would not only strengthen our 'keeping department but add competition to current number one Dean Kiely.

Stuart Pearce may well be reluctant to sell, but with Nicky Weaver again fully fit and highly rated Joe Hart recently added to the City books, not to mention the legendary Peter Schmeichel`s son, Kasper another promising youngster a £2 million offer could sway the Manchester City boss.

Surely Portsmouth now have the money and ambition to sign a better keeper than David James.

I don't understand why Harry would want him. I am not a fan of David James and the fact that he even got into the England squad with last season dredful performance in goal for City shocked me. He's 35-years-old, another reason I wouldn't buy him, he would only be in the squad for a season or two then he would retire along side Dean Kiely who is also 35-years-old. So then we would be on the look out for another two goal keepers. Whats the point in that and what a waste of money. Why don't we go for someone younger and talented like Charles Itandje from Lens who we were linked with earlyer.

Do we really need to waste £2m on someone who justifiably earned the nickname "Calamity" ????

We only really need another prem keeper because Jamies out. Maybe we should be getting someone in on loan? I think Dudek would be ideal!

charlie & lincspfcdan are right in my opinion, i dont think we have anywhere near the money hyped about at the moment so a loan would be the sensible option. I think the arrival of a contract for calamity will see a fairly prompt and understandable transfer request from Ashdown

I'd not disagree, James wouldn't be my number one pick for a 'keeper to bring in. But with this said I think his form last season was good, think your being a little harsh linvoy. People don't forget the mistakes, but I don't think he had that many really, all 'keepers make them, and he had made no more than any other IMHO last season. But if we do sign a 'keeper, not loan him, I'd prefer a younger model. Dudek, or Carson would be good options on loan. Green would be better if we were buying, maybe even Richard Wright, had a bad couple of years but you don't become a bad 'keeper over night, or do you...

buy young is positive.even re building the confidence of a demoralised keepers like Wright / Carson is ok by me. James is not a really bad keeper pompeyryug but neither is he a good one, City fans will tell you it was Distin who controlled his box and not through choice. HR does not make many signing mistakes and i know he loves anything to do with his ols west ham lot, but i cant see how James is a step forward.

As I say I'd rather a younger model, so Green, Wright, or Carson would suit me, even Dudek but only as a loan option really, but he'd not do that.
