The penultimate day of the Toast team running this feature and we have already given you a full run down on the QPR game of 1981. Today let`s go back a further two years and have a look at a rather unusual Pompey hero.

His name was Phil Ashworth and he was a rather strange signing for manager Frank Burrows to make. Pompey were at the time lingering at the bottom of the Football League pool and money was tight but with crowds averaging over 15,000 players were keen to sign. Ashworth had played the previous season at Rochdale and had been languishing in their reserves. He had previously set the world alight at Workington, Southport and Bournemouth. Fans thought that he (Burrows) had lost the plot and there were only a few fans who had even heard of him!!

What a spectacular Pompey career Phil had - he started four games for Pompey all at home. Pompey won them all and he scored four goals, some of them wonder strikes. Yet he was back to the reserves and off to Scunthorpe the next season. To be honest fans that saw him play would have to admit that he was a player with little skill but one who would give 100% effort in the cause. He raised his game because playing in front of 24,000 against Bradford City in a table topping crunch game was rather different to playing in front of 24 for Rochdale Stiffs; he scored in the first minute too!

He probably has the best goals to game ratio of any Pompey player who scored four or more times.

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities - past or present - who have a birthday on this day...

Smith staying at Northampton

Personally I wouldn't have thought Cook would have brought Smith back but even if the Pompey manager wanted this he couldn't under the terms of his Northampton loan.

Almost there...stay on target

The win over Newport saw Pompey react well to the defeat to Stevenage with most results going in the Blues' favour too, meaning we've effectively got a seven point buffer on Boro.

League Two 2016/17 Golden Boot Battle (27/3/17)

With most playing 39 League Two games in the 2016/17 season, this year could still see a few players break the 20 goal mark.
