'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Manager is losing the fans as slump drags on.

This was to be the updated match report after saturday's defeat to Leeds, it was my missus' 40th as I mentioned at the time, this obviously took up a lot of time over the weekend, I was going to do a full report after at least seeing some highlights.

Since then though the interweb has alive with fans clambouring for the managers head after a 50% loss rate so far this season, not great form and attendances are starting to reflect the disillusionment amongst Pompey fans.

Pompey did their usual trick of not coming alive until the second half, this infuriates us fans as we pay for a full match and not one good half. I myself have been pleading for a good performance at Fratton for a long while, they have been few and far between for nearly 3 seasons now, the away form is fairing little better as well, although seem to suit counter-attack football better.

Now a quarter of the season is up, fans and owners alike start to expect to see progress on the pitch, Pompey have been sporadic in that respect, sountless onfield personnel changes don't help the situation for sure, one thing Pompey fans will not except however is lack of effort in a blue shirt, if a player is out of form but gives his all, 9 times out of 10 he will be given a fair amount of slack from the terraces.

The big issue with the team is obviously lack of goals, we have lacked an out and out scorer for a while now, no-one can seem to hit the net regularly, Benjani will run all day long but he will never be prolific, his best ever return was 4 seasons ago when he bagged 15 for the only time in his career, since then he has only scored another 11 goals, Varney averages 1 in 4, while Huseklepp just under that total, all good honest players but none prolific or likely to get 20 in a season.

Dave Kitson is off the radar at the moment but for Pompey averages, that's right 1 in 4.

In a nutshell thats where a lot of our problems lie, on saturday our best chances fell to Halford and Ward, both supposedly defensive players, our most regular player to appear in goalscoring positions seems to be Norris, he seems to lack the necessary composure when in front of goal though, so again not enough output.

So, back to the manager, Steve Cotterill angers a lot of fans with his man management, Rocha is a favourite amongst the crowd as is Hreiedarsson, their abscence as we struggle riles fans, if we were winning of course it wouldn't matter, the Matt Ritchie departure also angered a few, his success at Swindon highlighting the matter, we don't know what happens behind closed doors of course, he may of been out of order, but then again we don't care about that, on the pitch is what we see.

Attendances have dropped to around the 12,000 mark, all your 'premiership' fans have probably dropped off, but I know a fair few who have stopped going because the football is not entertaining enough, this up to the manager to put right and quickly.

So the fans want a change, no doubt the money men will be taking note as the turnstiles stop spinning, CSI have been going about their business quietly and effectively so far, I put my faith in them whole heartedly now I see the direction they take, I don't feel Cotterill will leave this month, but if he can't get the maximum out of the men on the pitch in the next two games I reckon he will depart, patience is a virture we are told, Lawrence has called for the fan's to 'stay with us', we always have Liam, but its time to stop selling us short.

I understand people voting with their feet, but please dontvote on Wednesday. Do the right thing and attend the charity game, and let the Russians families see how passionate Pompey fans are. This is not the time to boycott Cotterill Play up Pompey

Also, a good article summing the situation up well. No manager would have failed to struggle in the conditions SC has had to put up with. The squad is thin and again lacked a pre-season. I expect the team to improve a great deal as they learn during the season. SC can improve too as he learns about the team. Nobody expected promotion this season.. so... it comes down to the real fans sticking with the team during the low points. And let's face we have seen much much worse teams playing for Pompey in this division in years gone by. The glory fans have gone obviously. Also I know a few fans who are finding it hard financially and stop going. They often then try to pass this off as 'the football isn't good enough'. No shame in not being willing to pay the high prices asked these days. So I guess it comes down to the real fans who can afford it. I dare say more real fans would come back and stump up if we were winning, so it goes both ways. I predict a turn-around in performances soon and fans coming back through the gates like they did when we went on that little run last year. But overall, sacking SC now would be a short-termist move at this point in time and that is not something the owners will want to look like I suspect.

I think people do understand the problems but,m in my opinion, the team has and is underperforming. Bring back Rocha for a start, stop playing full backs as centre backs and vice versa and give us a bit more up top. Every week its "we were better when we changed it in the second half" - well bloomin well start with it! Nothing to do with glory fans, more so a lot of people who can see the team is capable of more.

Talking of under-performing teams, i'm off to Montenegro tomorrow morning, I must be a glutton for punishment!

I have been a supporter through out..but there is a list of good managers at this level looking for jobs..and bristol city and forrest will pip us to their signitures i am sure.. Dave Jones-Billy Davies-Sean O'Driscoll, but to name just 3. We missed out on Le Fondre-Billy Sharp-Scummer Phillips, all would have done a freat job, even dreaded ex everton Scummer (forget his name-was at Rangers and Blackpool) would have/could have done a job..instead we go for benjani..love him as we do..not a great marksman.

I dont like managers being sacked but I have never liked this guy and I cannot believe the amount of people that bang on about the conditions he has worked under. Yes the squad isnt/hasnt been the largest but it is made up of good players and there is no way we should be underperforming like we are. Cotterill seems thick and bloody minded to me. If your squad is small it might be a good idea to not have a terrible disciplinary record for starters. Looks like he is losing or has lost the dressing room. Again we know the squad is small so why leave players out because of personal gripes, let alone one of our best in Rocha. Our form last year was inconsitent which is remenisent of a poorly managed group of good players who have the potential but arent being dealt with correctly. I feel like I could go on all day to be honest. I'm so frustrated with the manager it is ruining going to fratton park.

Going to get straight to the point... Get shot of Cotterill, the bloke's a crap manager in every way. I too am fed up with all the excuses dished out for him and by him, they are just that...excuses. Simple fact is he's totally tactically inept and arrogant with it, and sticking with him will just bring us more of the same. Enough now!!!

Liquor & poker be careful, some one else called people who didn't agree with him not " real fans". I think Paultsmouvhas it right, the Leeds trip cost me circa 200 and whilst it was my choice to go, I do expect the team to put in two 45 mins plus extras of effort. I don't expect the manager to still be learning on the job now, one win in some 20 something games is just not good enough. I don't see e ready made replacement out their as a freebie, I also don't think it's critical yet but I think Potty Cottey has about 3 maybe 4 weeks to turn it around, or he will go e- meritus , e for elbow - meritus, cos he deserved it. I have been to probably 80% of Pompeys away games in the last 6 years at some considerable sacrifice and I definetly class my self as a real fan. Cott's record is one win in 23 I am being told.
RussellM
I also think CSI should insist on Option3 of the vote, too long now Cott has refused an assistant manager preferring a couple of yes men and not having his ideas challenged or at least exposing them.
RussellM
Have to agree with that Russell. If he ain't going to go he needs an assistant manager (not a YES man) who is able to exploit a game tactically. The opposition only need to look at one DVD from the last two seasons and they must know for certain how we are going to play.
cornypomp
stuart gray has an un eventful record and was awful up the road..we are heading for a spanking there too..

Can't Sean O'Driscoll help out a bit?
Et_tu_Pompeii
I've always been behind him, but I've had enough, and I was holding my breath on Sunday expecting the owners to make the inevitable announcement - but it never came. Today the owners have spoken in The News, and pledged their faith in Cotterill. I spose we should trust them, but its diffiicult after all thats gone on and the very little communication we've had from them. This is only the second time they've deigned to speak to the fans. And their judgement differs from the majority of ours. Still, fact seems to be SC is staying a while longer, so we have no choice but to get behind the manager and do what we do best, ie supporting the club through adversity.
tracyc
is it possible they've come out behind him because we can't afford to pay him off?
pentonpompey
Who knows? But surely Storey had already gone before the cotterill deal was brokered? Or was he?
gandor1
i've been trying to stand by SC but results are starting to get me worried but we can't sack him til we have someone ready to come in and replace him
