Match of the Day - call it hat tricks day I suppose with three for Mike Trebilcock and a trio for Guy Whiitingham. Then there was the first of Pompey`s three League cup to Old Trafford in five years when trailing 3-2 after the first leg at Fratton when late goals from Kenny Black and Martin Kuhl gave them some hope. However they were unable to progress against what was a full strength United side.

I referred to the disaster at Charlton in 1967 last week when Pompey left the Valley with their unbeaten record in tatters. Finally of course 2009 saw Pompey at last break their duck in the eighth game of the season.

Birthdays see the celebration of the great Duggie Read an all time Pompey legend - why did he never play for Scotland? Vincent Pericard who was 'training with` Bournemouth last week and of course current out of favour defender Ricardo Rocha is thirty three. Just a note James Brown is not the Godfather of Soul but Jimmy Brown formerly of Aston Villa who played five games at the end of the 1979/80 season which ended in promotion and the start of the route back. At the promotion party the fans chanted 'give him a contract` but the board ignored them.

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities - past or present - who have a birthday on this day...

3/10/1982: Vincent Pericard
3/10/1978: Ricardo Rocha
3/10/1943: James Brown
3/10/1917: Duggie Reid

Lots of away games & onlt one for me. That first & infamous season in the top flight under Alan Ball. October 1987 at nearly 21 years young, up in a hired car with 4 others to see our gallant lads get stuffed, again, happy days!
