Match of the Day for most would go back just three years to our first competitive game on European soil over in Portugal. The army of Pompey fans that made the trip will certainly never forget it neither will those of us who pleaded with pub landlords to stay open until the game finished.

Of course this may also be the only Pompey game that started and finished in different days and it was past midnight when the final whistle blew! It was also a nervous affair as for long periods it seemed as though despite having a two goal lead the adventure would end at the first hurdle. However Pompey found their form eventually and two Peter Crouch goals saw us through. It was so close though and when the draw was made for the group stage we were farcically drawn to play twenty mile down the road in Braga.

For me though the other outstanding memory was on 1979 and the trip to Bournemouth. My son had been born on the previous morning and to celebrate 10,000 Pompey fans made the trip to Dorset and blocked just about every road in the county.

One or two ales were sunk before Terry Brisley`s head got to Archie Styles far post cross and sunk the Cherries. The song being sung all around the ground to the tune of Boney Ms Brown Girl in the ring was 'Show me Promotion`! Now how did I remember that?

No birthdays today.

2 games. Away to Norwich in 2004 and on that game in Portugal, 3 years ago. I could write a 10,000 dissation on that magical trip but words are not enough. Probably as a total experience the greatest Pompey match of all. And that says a lot having done 35+ years & 700+ games. You just had to be there.

Some will 'fulfil their career elsewhere'

Names weren't mentioned but Main is seen as having 'no Fratton future' as Cook prepares, if he hasn't already, to inform people they may need to 'fulfil their career elsewhere'.
