Match of the Day is again presented with a very tough decision, in fact as I looked through the list I thought - I there a win in that list? Well there are a couple but I have decided to plump for another thrashing and this time it is back to 1960 and the 7-4 loss at the Valley.

1960/61 was perhaps the gloomiest season in the club`s history as the club who had been champions ten years earlier slipped to the third level of English football with hardly a whimper. In the first eleven away games of that season Pompey picked up just three points and conceded forty one goals!! That included a 5-1 defeat at the Dell. Four goals was he most they managed to score in one game that season and yet they let in seven at Charlton. The Pompey defence included Jimmy Dickinson now thirty five and England B international Phil Gunter.

They were bad times to be a fan but the home record was passable with ten home wins and relegation while always seeming a certainty was almost avoided after a spirited run in following the February sacking of boss Freddy Cox. George Smith replaced him a few weeks later.

Fortunes changed next season when they bounced back as Third Division Champions.

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities - past or present - who have a birthday on this day...

1/10/1976: Alex Totten
1/10/1962: Paul Walsh

The 2 drawn home games in 1996 vs Palace & 2005 vs Newcastle. Neither stick in the memory bank. Happy birthday to a brilliant player, Paul Walsh. His partnership with Guy Whittingham was a dream that sadly ended with heartbreak.
