We will forget all about 1974 not a good day at the office and yes I was there. Star game for me goes to 1967 and the visit of Charlton Athletic.

Pompey had a great start to the season and had gone seven games unbeaten when they welcomed the Haddicks to Fratton Park on a Wednesday night - note not Tuesdays back then!! With Roy Pack injured George Smith made a rare change and bought in former Charlton centre half Frank Haydock for his first game of the season.

That season Pompey averaged over 24,000 per home game and a good crowd watched a one sided game as the home side romped to the top of the table and preserved the country`s last unbeaten start. The main thing to stick in my mind of that game forty four years ago were the antics of Charlton keeper Charlie Wright. He always loved to play to the crowd and that night he was on top form as the Fratton End slung his insults he just conducted the crowd or made signs behind his back. He got a great ovation for his sportsmanship at the end.

The good start finished the next Wednesday when in the return fixture on a very wet night at the Valley (I was soaked) Charlton won 4-0!!

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities - past or present - who have a birthday on this day...

Thankfully too young to remember the dark day in 1975 & it's horrible consequences. Just homes games for me in 1992, a bad back pass by Andy Awford let them in for a winning goal. That season we missed automatic promotion to the top league, as West Ham scored one goal more than us. Even a draw that day would have made a massive difference but hey ho!!! Also a poor day in 1997 as we lose at home to Reading, unheard of those days. Little Reading winning at Fratton Park, no that can't happen, sadly it did!
