What a dreary day to be a Pompey fan!! Four straight defeats after the war but the first win in 1978 saw the first ever meeting with Wigan Athletic. Pompey were now in Division Four and had found life tough at first but were now beginning to get their home form together. Wigan had just been elected to League as a replacement for Southport (another club we had never met).

Steve Davey still a striker in those days scored the winner five minutes from time. For the record Wigan won the return at Springfield Park 2-0.

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities - past or present - who have a birthday on this day...

26/9/1944: Alan Stephenson
26/9/1933: John Davies

The last 4 home league games for me. Vivid memories of our top flight win over Wimbledon, Lee Sandford flying down the wing & cutting in & scoring the winner at the Fratton End.
