Pompey's Defenders

Vital Pompey will be reviewing Pompey`s options in different positions. I will sum up where I think we need to improve and where we are strong.

Right Backs

Glen Johnson
Richard Duffy
Andy Griffin

The arrival of Glen Johnson means that we have an attacking right back who loves to get forward and help out the forwards. Glen Johnson is a top class player no doubt about it and with him in at right back we will look strong in that position. Richard has done well out on loan but does Harry really think that Duffy can provide back up? I think that Andy Griffin will be the main back up to Glen.

Healthy? We have depth in this position but not particularly strong, outside Glen. I don`t think we need anymore right-backs. I think Duffy is going to become a Pompey regular in the future and I hope he isn`t loaned out! I think our best hope is that Johnson stays fit.

Left Backs

Matty Taylor
Dejan Stefanovic

Matt Taylor has kept on improving at Portsmouth over the years and has amazing passion for the club. Going forward has always been his strength, but last year he proved to the fans that he can also defend. Dejan Stefanovic will only be left back cover if another left back is not recruited! It`s not Dejan`s strength by any stretch of the imagination and when he does play there we lack attacking capabilities down the left.

Healthy? No not really. We are going to have to bring in a left back in my eyes! A half decent one to provide cover for Matty? Yes because Dejan isn`t comfortable there. We could even buy a top class left back like Roberto Carlos and push Taylor on to left mid! I would prefer to see a squad player come in and provide competition to Taylor.

Centre Backs

Noe Pamarot
Linvoy Primus
Dejan Stefanovic
Andy O`Brien

Noe Pamarot, was seen as a poor signing but he came on against Wigan and showed that he can hold his own in the Premiership. I don`t think we will see him much next year but not a bad player to have in the squad encase of an injury crisis. Linvoy always gives 100% and being quick and strong, he will no doubt start the season on the bench, before becoming a regular. Dejan (last year`s captain) was very inconsistent last term but he is a battler and I expect Tony Adams to work wonders with this guy. Andy O`Brien is also prone to the odd mistake but for the majority of the time last year he did a solid job.

Healthy? No, we need at least one, possible two centre backs in this summer. It isn`t the lack in depth I worry about, it`s the cheer quality of our centre backs. Other clubs would identify our centre backs as a weakness. I think at least one of them should be sold either Andy or Noe. In their place should see a top class centre back (Sol Campbell?) and an up and coming youngster (Anton?) My warning to Harry is that without strengthening in this position, we will leak goals.

My expected defence line up come August 19th;

RB: Glen Johnson
CB: Signing
CB: Dejan Stefanovic
LB: Matty Taylor

Well looks like we have one new face coming in, multiple paper this morning saying a fee of around 4 million has been agreed for Sylvain Distin, who in my opinion would be an excellent recruit, and you never know but with Sol now deciding he wants to stay in the premiership (probably because no clubs would come in and pay him what he wants!) then that move may be resurrected?

Distin and Sol and i'm happy!

dejan can then become left back cover!

I'd not disagree that a possible cover option for Matty Taylor is needed at left back, but other than that full backs can usually be covered by others can't they, players may not always be comfortable there but if they can defend they'll play there. Pamarot & Primus could both play FB if needed. Central Defender covering wont get forward as much but you know he'll defend twice as well (in theory) Certainly need at least one CD, a young, but also experienced player would be good. One with a proven history, but still young enough to be a long term option.

rug although i agree with your first point, if you want a european side then you don't start a season with your left back playing right back!

I'm confused Les, what do you mean when you say "you don't start a season with your left back playing right back!" Are you merely saying that you may use this as an option during the season but you wouldn't want to start the season with a left back maybe having to play right back to cover, you'd rather the option is in place to begin with?

Yea that looks about right les. I agree with your lineup. I saw dejan in Tiger Tiger last night getting drunk with Viafara.

Yaya Toure is a midfielder not a centreback

really ow right i was just knew he was young lol! rug i mean you may need to use players from different positions during the season but no excuse at the start, it just shows that you don't have enough depth in your squad

Chimbonda is a right back not a left back. In my opinion we need a new left back and Matty can be used for cover in midfield. Thats his best position

yer agree what about distin and barry?

i think Barry would also be a great signing if it happened. For me though, Distin would provide alot of stability at the back & he does have more years left in him than Sol.

I would love to be wrong bit i dont think Sol or Barry will come, Sol is apparently a bit of an ego so a move to a club smaller in crowd etc from the arse wont appeal, and Barry well i think we are being used as a back stop for contract negotiations whilst he waits to see who the new Villa owner will be. Distin would be a great move

I'm not saying this could, or would happen but what about someone like Matthew Upson? He may have been at the heart of a team that went down last season, and may have suffered a loss of form (as all players do at some point) but he did also spent a lot of time out injured. He has the experience we'd need/want and would still have plenty of years ahead of him. He is still out injured isn't he I guess, so he would be of no benefit at this point anyway, so a pointless thought in any case....

To me it's looking like Matty T on the left, Johnson on the right, and Dejan and Distin in the middle. Personally I'd rather see Linvoy in for Dejan at the start of the season as he always seems to get drafted in after injury/bad results and always does well. We know that's not gonna happen as Arry's gonna make Dejan the captain.

10 mill would have been FAAAR to much for Davies...sure he's promising, but not worth anywhere near that much at the moment.

I have to say the lack of bolstering the defense concerns me most. Last year we conceded 62 goals only surpassed by Sunderland. I believe a disproportionate number of these goals were given away in the last 5-10 minutes of the game too. So a concentration on improving the defense and overall fitness seems overdue.

Im hoping Tony Adams will have an impact on our defense, we looked pretty teribble for most of last season. With his experiance & a couple of good signings it should improve us no end!
