Cotterill reflects on Bristol City draw

Cotterill reflects on Bristol City draw

There was not 'really' a lot to shout about from a 0-0 draw at Bristol City yesterday - granted listening on the radio is not the easiest of ways to base an opinion although you get a 'rough idea' and whilst it had its moments a draw seemed about fair...

Steve Cotterill, as he told The Pompey Site, sees it as a 'missed opportunity' though.

Not taking chances again is a worry really, as we have to start taking more, and he knows this. 3 games in a week is something, even at this early stage, Cotterill thought has taken its toll: 'it was an opportunity missed because we could have taken all three points.

'Bristol City were the better team in the first half, but we were the better side in the second half and created the clear-cut chances. We just didn't take them.

'Dean Gerken in their goal made a couple of very good saves. They had a few good performers, but he was probably their best.

'They had a few shots from the edge of the box, but nothing clear cut.

'But we've had three games in a week and that takes its toll. That's why there wasn't a lot of high-tempo football.'

The good thing now is that unlike the start of this 3 games in 7-day period we are 'gradually' starting to bring in a few more bodies, a couple more have been added during the course of this.

So, more 'options' are becoming available so having the ability to 'change things around' when we have a schedule like this in future should 'hopefully' be available to Cotterill...

Without a doubt, again listening on the radio can be misleading of course - although I think not in this case, one of the pluses from the game was Erik Huseklepp!

The new arrival came on for a 5-minute cameo and did the business: 'it was a good six minutes, for sure, when he opened the door. I just felt by putting him on down our right-hand side he could maybe get at their left-back, who had already had a tough game against Liam Lawrence.

'I don't necessarily see the right flank as his best position - he plays wide on the left for Norway.

'This is why I wanted him - he will add a lot of different things to us. He can play off the striker, wide right or wide left. He's got great feet as he showed by dancing around three or four. We're pleased with him.

'All I want to do is to try to integrate him gently. Now we have a few more players in the squad, what we don't have to do is flog people.

'Liam Lawrence is still trying to get up to speed, and bringing Erik on meant Liam didn't have to play the full 95 minutes.'

More of the same from 'Erik the Viking' and we will not go far wrong, right?

All-in-all a 'decent point' really.

Especially taking into account that - despite their pretty poor start before this - Bristol City went to, and beat, Leicester in midweek! It would have been nice to get more from this game although a point is not the worst return by any means.

Had we 'only' got a point at home I would have been more disappointed, but we came back with something and this adds to the impressive win over Reading so sets us up nicely for Cardiff at the weekend.

Bring 'em on...

It was a fairly even game but we definitely had the better chances in the second half and Lawrence really should have scored. Erik looked really dangerous when he came on, so hopefully we'll see more of him against Cardiff next week.

Folks are always Cotterill bashing, and i don't think he deserves it myself..his signings have all been good, whether this season or last when he was crippled financially, Huseklepp sounds like he could be a great purchase..and i agree again that he has to ease him in gently, same with benji..i guess benji nees more hours to get fully fit.. But before all the moaning at Eric meagre 5 minutes and how it should have been more etc..ask your self this..HOW MANY GOALS HAVE WE CONCEEDED SINCE Pearce has led the line...

Whilst I agree with the majority of what you're saying Plymouth, I must disagree with you about only giving Eric only 5 minutes. Why rush to try and get him registered if you're only going to give him 5 minutes?? As for Liam, I don't think he's been the same player since he came back from his injury and I also think the captains armband has had a negative effect on him.

Got to be very happy with another clean sheet the strikers will improve with games and better formations. I feel reasonably happy now, another midfielder - left footer who can play wide or central and the squad will be pretty full! Unbelievable! PS - if Liam isn't fit, bring Eric on sooner!

Good point Graham, not only have we not conceded, but we haven't looked like conceding. Against Reading they didn't create anything too clear cut and likewise on Saturday. He looks like a great bargain.

    No Crawley return for Tubbs

Tubbs doesn't have a future at Pompey, he's on the transfer-list but offloading him could be difficult given his wages. These wouldn't be anywhere within Crawley's reach.

Pitfalls of Sheffield Wednesday loanee returning

As Catlin put it 'the gamble' of aiming sign Sheffield Wednesday loanee Lavery has to be one Pompey fans understand. It isn't as cut and dried as saying 'he's a free agent' sign him!

    Lassie coming home...well sort of!

A-box-to-box player, capable of defensive duties, with ability to burst forward with intent to make things happen - Diarra is Pompey's man and wants an England return. I jest of course!

    Will pair stay at Fratton?

It's been made (more than once) clear by Catlin Pompey want Davies & Hollands to stay. Both (also more than once) have said they want to this - deals have to be right for all concerned.
