Pompey rumours - 30th July (Anichebe)

Its been pretty quiet on the old 'rumours' front, let alone the actual transfer front, for Pompey recently has it not?

Got to say that I do not buy much into this at all, but pompeym@ has picked this interesting one up, albeit an almost dead cert not to happen, and shared it in the forum ( Strikers - Potential Transfer Targets for Pompey - here) this evening...

'Couple of days ago this rumour popped up out of no where
28 Jul 2011 20:04:26
portsmouth are GOING TO BID FOR VICTOR ANICHEBE in the region of 4 mil. this is, however, unlikely.

Which I didn't bother thinking to much into but today I've heard Anichebe mentioned elsewhere and he's just popped up on the rumour site again.

30 Jul 2011 13:22:31
Everton strike Victor Anichebe is set to undergo a medical at Portsmouth on Monday after agreeing personal terms with South Coast club.

So it might actually have some grounds in truth, its no secret Everton are desperate for money (after being out bid by a champ club for a player worth 150k..) and Anichebe is definitely a fringe player at best so maybe we really are after him.

Would be a pretty good signing if you ask me, he's young (23), strong and fast and could do a good job up top by himself. He doesn't have much pedigree after only scoring 7 in 91 apps for Everton but they've primarily been on the wing and a step down and playing in a more central role might do him a world of good.

Hope its not really for 3-4mil though
.

Rug's views, for what its worth...

Would I take Anichebe?

Quite simply yes, although I would take us signing virtually any striker at the moment!

To be fair I think you sum up his qualities, 'young', 'strong' and 'fast' - I would add to that, I would assume, 'hungry'. Again like you say his goalscoring record is not great but given a frequent opportunity, and ideally as an out-and-out striker he would do the business at this level.

Would I want us paying 'much money' for him?

Nope, then again I do not think we should be splashing much for anyone given our current status and the fact that 'lavish spending' was the primary reason we ended up in our mess!

Alas I would doubt that there is much truth, if any, to this rumour...

These 'rumours sites' trawl through t'internet to snuffle up whatever they can find so fear not Matt I would doubt that there is an interest, let alone a fee being agreed and paid by PFC as obscene as 3-4m for the Everton man, or anyone else for that matter!

UPDATE
Well, there 'may' be a little more to this than meets the eye?

There may well have been an approach for Anichebe, although this would have been/is an approach to take him on loan - seems a more realistic rumour!

I think I would pass out from sheer excitement if somebody really did pay 4m for Anichebe. No scrap that, I'd be just as excited at the news we were paying someone 4m to take him. You are aware he's scored 2 goals in 3 seasons since Kevin Nolan tried to end his career? He looked an okay prospect before that, and would maybe have been worth a mars bar or two, but not anymore.

lol slow news day rug ;), but i agree its highly unlikely but nothing else is going on and i've now heard it from 2 different people and on that rumour site so possibly theres some truth to it... naaa lol
pompeym@
so you didn't agree with Yak's article on your site about this being big vic's year then Mike? lol
pompeym@
the rumour site mentioned is aregular stop for me on my internet journey, but you have to realise anyone can put whatever they want on it, ant hunch whim or fancy..
plymouth graham
pompeym@ even Moyes who's comments that article was based on doesn't believe Anichebe will have a big year, we're simply not signing any players to the extent where a good transfer window for us now will be convincing somebody to take Yakubu, so Moyes is trying to big up what we have so when we decide to "go with what we've got" (as we do every year) some simple morons may actually believe Anichebe is the answer. The simple fact is he's a striker who hasn't scored in 18 months.

Plymouth graham right it could just be some rumour that has got are hopes high on geting a new striker. I think it's not true we would have herd some news on it if we had put a bid in not only that but would we pay that price for a new player we may have new owners but we are not flashing the cash the most we have spent is 1m and that was for greg halford. I hope it is true cuz i h8 KITSON just watching him on the ball makes me want to pass out at the matches.

m@, even on a 'slow news day' you may well have uncovered something perhaps afterall? see the 'update' at the bottom of the article...

Kitson too reading 500k I wish . That would be 20k a week off wage bill
Pompeyhussler
well when you hear someone's name from 3 or 4 different sources that aren't connected it usually means theres some truth to it so i thought what the hell lol. and Mike i'm guessing you don't think he'd cut it even if he dropped down a level then?
pompeym@
Please, please, please let this be true, let me get this straight, if true, you will give us 4mil and we give you Anichebe *faints* Might be a decent championship striker, but at the prem level, he is absolute garbage.
Rob-EFC
Yak yes. his wages no
MickTait
Well we will soon know if this is all true by monday btw I hope kitson stay because he may not be a very good player in my opinions but he has scored goals and he is one more body for are squad but on the over hand if he is going then steve cotterill most have a strker in his site and hopefully Anichebe mite be are man but dont get your hopes to high up ps does any one know how meny portsmouth supports are going away to boro because me and my m8 are going i just was wondering what the amphitheater is going to be like i know it is a odd question.
POMPEY till i DIE
Would he make it in the Championship? Possibly be okay for you but he wouldn't set the league alight, and I don't think if he drops a division he has the quality to win a move back up again. There's no chance of a loan move by the way, we don't have enough players as it is. We're desperately trying to find someone, anyone, to take Yobo and Yakubu as they're both on 45k a week yet can't even get in the 18 most games and we need that off the wage bill. But Anichebe is a different story, he's crap and mainly hated by the Goodison crowd but he gives us an option in 2 or 3 positions.
EvertonMike
Well although this one excited me when I read it, judging by Everton fans reactions I'm not sure if this is such a great acquisition. He seems quite poorly rated, and with 3-4 million being mentioned, that can't be good value.
