The likely lads

The likely lads

No, I am not making reference to the 70s TV series, I am now making reference to what I have previously said I felt we needed player wise.

What are we lacking? - Here.

As a refresher, in a nutshell, to the above this is what I thought...

* A left back and right back - at a push a versatile full back that could play on either flank.
* We are pretty stocked, but assuming Moko goes then another central defender would not go amiss.
* Again we have decent numbers but another central midfielder would be handy.
* Wide right in the attacking area is something we need.
* A striker, a central striker at that is essential. Varney will play wide so Kitson and Kanu is never enough.

I have little idea on the full back(s) or central defender to be honest, perhaps at a push - albeit an unlikely, dare I even say it unwanted - Ibrahima Sonko could come back on a free if the money was right. Then again he will want to play, most of us would not want this though! That said we have the Jamaican guy on trial and Dean Leacock has been 'linked'.

Options were split, and to be honest whilst still unsure myself, but Boss Hogg could be the most likely central midfield option. He will not get a look-in with Villa, then again why leave a premier league club as a squad player simply to join a championship one as the same! Keith Andrews is again being 'linked'. Although this trail has gone Brian Howard could be one to watch out for?

The striker looks most likely to be Martin Paterson at this point, Burnley do not want to sell though but with a 'reported' £2.3m bid in for him will they change their mind... That said Gary Taylor-Fletcher has come into the mix too?

Despite pleas to the contrary Jason Puncheon could well be this wide man. Not as he is a scummer, but because it is 'said' that he has some attitude problems, I have reservations about him. Seems an ideal loanee as he comes in with a blaze of glory and then fades. Do we really want to pay money for that, have we not been done enough like that over the years with players of that ilk? If only Matty Taylor could come back, 'links' to our former star have been there but I think he is off to West Ham, if he has not signed already...

What say you guys?

What do you make of the names I offer up, do you have any of your own to share?

As always you are asked to leave your thoughts below...

It's such a pity that Matty Taylor left the club with such a whimper. He had been outstanding for years for us, and yet a summer of overspending on players combined with a Redknapp grudge meant he left as a bit-part player, which he never was. This might be one of the reasons he wouldn't fancy coming back here. Although West Ham do offer more in terms of potential and salary.

The trail has gone a bit cold on Puncheon, who'd I'd personally like to see be given a chance. Other players not mentioned are the possible loanees, most notably from Chelsea. Kakuta would be brilliant, but I'm not holding my breath, I expect that IF we do get anyone, it'll be Bertrand.

Rug, Why are you so desperate for full backs? We have Herman, Ward, Halford and TBH all capable of playing there - maybe a leftback but 2 full backs?! Surely midfield and forwards are needed - 2 wide players winger/forwards a central midfielder with an eye for a pass and a striker..... I must admit I think not giving Webber another year may be a mistake (depending on wages and fitness of course) he could play wide or central. But still plenty of time until we are truly desperate. I'd like it all sorted before the first game but the transfer window is open throughout August so Im not panicing yet.

Why no one is mentioning a CAM; central attacking midfield? Didn't you realize that KPB was the last player to play in such a role? David Norris is a central midfielder with an attacking mentality, but we need someone who is natural is this position!

weller surely putting Lawrence into the middle would solve the creative central mid problem? and Malta i disagree i think Norris or even Lawrence could play the attacking role and play it well. IMO we need 2 wingers and a proven striker thats gonna score 20+ goals followed closely by a young left back and a natural right back

i agree we need a couple of wingers and a striker or 2. we could try and beat the scummers to the signing of boa morte. he's not the player he once was but could still do a job for us in this division. patterson or taylor-fletcher would be good signings but can't think of an out and out striker that will get us 20+ goals a season maybe billy sharp or matt tubbs?

I still dont get the need for 2 full backs - a left back maybe but Halford and Ward are both rightbacks by trade so why a right back?

Benjani......Why??? too much money for too little return! Reading the comments from the Rovers fans; it doesnt't seem as if their crying too much at his loss! Too many people wear the rose tinted specs where the grinning idiot is concerned!

Chesterfield's O'Shea targeted

Although so far Pompey have had two bids turned down for Chesterfield's O'Shea. Will, assuming another bid (as it's expected) is made, it be third time luck for the Blues?

It wasn't Real Madrid but Bristol City isn't bad!

Contrary to what I just wrote (muppet that I am) this isn't at Fratton this is at Ashton Gate with Pompey heading to Bristol City on Saturday 30th July, with a 3pm kick-off.
