No trialist eh? We now have one

No trialist eh? We now have one

I seem to recall, not too long ago, that Steve Cotterill said that he would not be taking on any 'trialists' this summer.

So, it comes as a surprise to me this morning to read in The News that Shavar Thomas is doing just that, having a trial with us...

The 30-year-old Jamaican international captain, who I know nothing about other than the fact The News told us that much - and that he is a defender - will be with the squad for a week and should play in a 'behind-closed-doors' friendly.

For me this is an example as to why I think that Cotterill perhaps needs to remain silent at times. Just a week or so ago he ruled out trialists, and was not very complimentary as to what they could offer, but then we take one on.

To be honest I have no problem with trialists, yep they are hit and miss but surely it is down to the manager to decide how 'hit or miss' they will be?

Cotterill can now do this with Thomas...

again i think it was a news article that blew something SC said out of proportion, if i remember right what he actually said was don't many and definitely don't expect loads like under HR. As for the player, don't know much other than he's played his whole career in the US so it makes sense to trial him while we're over there.

You would not expect a 30yr old triallist to walk into the first team but people need to get real, Pompey are still financially strapped so if the guy can be a squad player and is affordable why the he'll not. SC did say "no triallists should turn up or come knocking" however it wasnt realistic and if anything if Pompey rep has seen him - what's the issue.

Well if you want to be picky it did say no trialists through the Fratton park doors, will most likely come to nothing any way.

Would this be a like-for-like replacement for mokoena? giving him the chance for that move he apparently wanted (if anyone will take him).
