A big 7-10-days?

A big 7-10-days?

We have had little 'dribs and drabs' thus far although the real 'influx' of players that people have been hoping, dare I say it if not expecting, at PFC has not materialised really has it?

And we do need it to!

Jason Pearce and Chuck are good signings, very good in fact and both add something not only to the squad but most definitely the starting 11, but they are nowhere near enough...

Yep, we have a number of weeks before the season kicks-off but pre-season training is now back and it is not long at all now until we play our first friendly, once this comes along others soon follow as does a return to America.

Whilst the travel chaos will not be the same this time as it was last summer the limited numbers is very much a possibility as things stand, although in a little under ½ a months time when we fly stateside you would hope, if not assume, this would be different?!

I think we have, or at least should have, gone past the 'if' so and so comes in point, there is not 'ifs', 'ands' or 'maybes' about it, we need signings but we also need to get enough bodies in place ASAP!

If too much time passes we know that we will again be playing 'catch-up' and we cannot afford another season where our pre-season, and squad bonding, happens in the opening month or so of the season...

By no means is it time to 'panic' yet, and I have little doubts we are working hard to bring in players, but we really could do with a few signing this week!

There is only so long that can pass with limited movement, days soon turn into weeks and then the months fly by.

That said all it takes is a day, maybe a couple of days, where a couple arrive on each of these and the shift this brings is phenomenal.

We have a little over a month before our opening game of the season, ideally we could do with a couple of weeks before this for the majority of players that will arrive this season to be together, start bonding as a squad and playing as a team in pre-season.

So, this week and the early part of the next is where I really do think we need to be increasing the numbers to at least 15 or so, that will be here next season, that will be the core of the seasons squad. Topping this up with a few more signings, be that permanent or loanees before the end of August, to take us to around 18-20 would be where we need to be...

And I really hope this is what the next 7-10-days will finally bring?

By all accounts it is pretty much certain, almost nailed on, that Luke Varney will be a confirmed signing this week. I know we keep hearing its 'nearly done' but Monday is said to be 90% certain that this will be the case.

Keeper Stephen Henderson is also 'said' to be training with us this week so his signing looks likely?

As said we do not quite need to start panicking yet, although the next week and a ½ is a time period that really needs to start seeing the major core of the 2011/12 seasons squad take shape...

Quite right , Rug. We haven't yet got a squad and I'm surprised that we didn't have more 'nailed-on targets' lined up prior to 1 July.

PFCblue, people need to be realistic about the fact that there is serious competition in the market and we don't have the financial muscle of say Leicester or the relegated sides with their parachute payments- or for that fact those that came down with us who also have some £15m of parachute payments. No time for panic and yet, don't care about the trip to the US and players will be pre season training at their own clubs. I'm not sure formation / blending is a big concern we know Cott is somewhat eratic about this at best. I also feel Cott will get some loans in but he will have to manage and select these a little better this season.

We do need some players in, considering we've only signed 2 players in a month doesn't worry me at all, I'm sure there are some signings waiting in the wings, plenty of time yet.

As far as the parachute payments go, do we still get them? I thought relegated clubs got payments for 3 or so years? Do we know if the money is being sent to creditors or do we have it this time round? Or is this something we should all know and a stupid question? I would also imagine SC has a number of loan targets in mind and will take them on as soon as needed, essentially adding 4 players to what we have now.

I have a feeling all of our parachute payments got given to us before we even got relegated.

Too True RUG we definately need to start thinking about the squad numbers, especially since we could still loose a couple of the current squad that we have, I think I would like to see a squad of 21-22 players, this may seem a little greedy maybe, but it only takes a couple os supensions and a couple of injuries and before you know it we cant fill the bench again with a squad of just 18. I am sure that some advances will be made in the next week or two and have too say that I have been pleasantly suprised by the calibre of the signings and targets so far, If we can bring in a few more similar players then we will have a good nucleus from which to build a squad, I am already getting a little excited about the new season, which is something I dont think I have allowed my self to feel at the start of the last! RUSSEL I too do not care about the trip to america and players should be doing pre season training at there current clubs, however we have shown season after season that we have not had enough time for our team to gel prior to the start of the season, the sort of cohesion that is required cannot be gained in a couple of training sessions, so although we dont need to panic, the sooner we get the core of our squad in the better for the start of the season.

yea we're still getting the parachute payments for this year and next, but that £8million happens to cover the CVA quite nicely with only a little extra needed from the owners so we won't be seeing any of it spent on player etc, which works in our favour still so its fine by me. As for players completely agree Rug need a good 6 or so by the time we go to the USA

as of the squad gelling, i think we should be ok there even if we don't get enough players in for the US trip, mainly cause we already have the spine of a very good 1st team once Varney's in (i.e GK, CB's, CM's and FW's)

So Russell what was all that nonsense from SC about in mid-June when he was saying he had targets who wanted to come to Pompey? Was that all crap, or did they decide they didn't want to come here?
