On this day in history...22nd May

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama.

No games on this day previously...so I thought what else could have happened in Pompey history on this day and referred to Roger Holmes` excellent book 'On this day`. Drew a comparable blank too with just news that in 1978 Frank Burrows signed Jack Smith as his chief coach and a year later Steve Foster and Peter Ellis signed new deals under the new Freedom of Contract rules.

Another feature, again courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, sees us look at those Pompey personalities - past or present - who have a birthday on this day...

2/5/1953: Paul Mariner

You could do- players signed on this day! Although you might run out of space to log them all in the Harry Redknapp era :-)

Great fan of Paul Mariner, a top player in his day & nice to see him in the pompey blue for a season. Ironically, whilst on holiday in Malta, just after he left us, saw him playing out there, late 80s.

Duo sign professional Pompey deals

Will Jez Bedford and Theo Widdrington be the future Pompey midfield? We'll certainly hope so, clearly the Blues do too or they wouldn't have signed professional deals at Fratton Park.

Nathan Thompson - A Swindon perspective

Prior to his departure for Wigan, Paul Cook wanted Nathan Thompson at Pompey. Interest was retained by Kenny Jackett, who completed his free transfer signing from Swindon last week.
