Who could we do with?

Who could we do with?

Its next to impossible to give much thought to 'who we should sign' and its too much like playing fantasy manager as well at the moment...

Quite how they would fit into the plans and how much, and for that matter how long they would want it, is anybodies guess but I want to play that game anyway!

The PFA official released list is out - here.

Based on this, having looked through, I came up with name after name of who 'I would like' but realistically, and taking into account what I thought we needed, how do these grab you?

Remember these are my own thoughts based as 'realistically' as I think I can going by the thoughts of what I shared in an article based on the bare minimum we needed to make up a squad of at least 17/18 for 2011/12: What (not who just yet) do we need? - Here.

Enough already eh, lets just see some names...

Matt Duke. Age: 33
Owain Fon Williams. Age: 24
Shane Higgs. Age: 34
Lenny Pidgeley. Age: 27

Based on the fact that we need to only bring in one keeper really, a youngster - or emergency loan - could cover at a push, I narrowed it down to an 'older hand' and 'younger potential'.

Whilst Duke would make a decent signing as cover I do know, albeit it at a lower level for a while, Fon Williams has been tipped to make moves several times so I just about lean towards him.

Both are 'realistic' I would say so if we could bring in either Duke or Fon Williams as back-up, ideally competitively challenging Paddy, I would not be unhappy...

James Clapham. Age: 35
Claude Davis. Age: 32
Anthony Gardner. Age: 30
Jon Harley. Age: 31
Gareth McAuley. Age: 31

Both full back areas and centrally need strengthening, problem is I could not find a right back that caught my eye - that said Willio Flood can play right midfield or right back, so would make a potential signing doubly interesting perhaps?

Clapham has been around the block a bit and has been playing lower down the leagues recently as has Harley - were both part of the 'taken in by' reign at Notts County or was the slide down the leagues a natural one, although I think Clapham was at Cheltenham last season anyway.

Davis, Gardner and McAuley all have their merits as central defenders but is Davis too much of a Sonko type player and what is Gardner's injury status?

McAuley and Harley could both be worth a punt, 'if' Gardner is not being trouble by injuries there is no way the one time England international is any worse than Mokoena! So why not if we can...

Lee Carsley. Age: 37
Chris Clark. Age: 30
Willio Flood. Age: 26
Bradley Johnson. Age: 24
Neil Kilkenny. Age: 25
Gavin Mahon. Age: 34
Michael McIndoe. Age: 31
Thomas Miller. Age: 32
David Norris. Age: 30
Therry Racon. Age: 27
Michael Stewart. Age: 30

In many ways midfield is 'probably' the area we need least work done on, but this was the area that I spotted most players for - problem is most were central players and how many more of these do we need?

'If' we could bring in another 2-3, but central players that can also play left or right we would be laughing!

The experienced battling midfield such as a Carsley, Miller - who can also offer something going forward - or Mahon would not go a miss but if we could get that and add the attacking flair of Norris too it is a no-brainer.

Should we be able to bring in 2 or 3 from Flood, Johnson, Kilkenny, Mahon, Norris or Stewart I would be more than happy. Johnson would be an awesome signing but 'word on the street' has it he already made it clear to Cotterill he did not want to sign for him in January when we 'stalked him' so would this opinion have changed?

Jeremie Aliadiere. Age: 28
Pablo Counago. Age: 31
Rory Fallon. Age: 29
Chris Porter. Age: 27

Not too many of them around, although forwards are usually available for a reason!

A 'fully fit and able' Aliadiere would be a no-brainer, the problem is if the former Arsenal man was that he would be a) out of our price range and b) playing in the premier league. 'Perhaps' with the benefit of pre-season behind him he could cut it but are we in the position to 'take a risk', so as much as I would see the benefits - if this paid off - we cannot, can we?

The risk factor also rules out Porter for me. A decent goalscoring record and could play in a wider role but he has had some bad injuries in recent years and that is probably why he is now without a club...

Counago has the undoubted pedigree at this level and above but, if I am wrong, did not do much last season but something tells me if we gave him service the Spaniard will score goals. Fallon kind of falls into the same category, with his bonus being he can play wide left quite comfortably so Counago and Fallon would not exactly disappoint me 'if' they could be signed to be honest.

So, what do you think of these names. Do they appeal to you?

Let us know with your comments and why not look through the PFA list too yourself and share some of your names below...

i think their will be alot of squad players who the prem teams just want off their wage bill so i think they will agree to let them go on frees this summer we just have to snap them up.. plus players on last years of their contracts who we could get for half their value.. ie halford, de lat

my lists on the PFA thread so i won't repeat them and tbh most cross over anyway, i'm surprised you left Bulmer out though, he'd be a good 2nd keeper i think and would definitely push Ashdown, also Kisnorbo and danny leadbitter, or did you think they where unrealistic?
21/05/2011 12:56:00
Meant to be away I lnow but could not resist a peak on my phone. Did not see leadbitter and do not know him also do not know the QPR keeper either tbh and he was only 19 I think? Kisnorbo is getting a chance with leeds during pre-season I thought so do not think he will leave anyway?

There will be plenty if PL cast offs and " just want to play football" types. Agree about Johnson that would be a turn up, he is said to dislike Cotterille because of something that happened between Cot and a player mate of his.. . . can't imagine it's true what with Cott's man management skills.

Another loan for Oxlade-Chamberlain

As I think we all know by now Oxlade-Chamberlain is the son of former Pompey winger Mark Chamberlain and the brother of Arsenal's & England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
