So the local derby between Fratton and North End finished all square with a Greg Halford header levelling an Ian Hume first half goal.
It was a result that neither wanted but both in the end probably deserved. A point just about ended any real chance Pompey had of reaching the playoffs and it will certainly not have helped Preston`s relegation struggle.
Both sides threw on attacking players as the second wore on in an effort to pinch the victory but the game petered out as a tame draw in the Fratton sunshine. Pompey certainly missed Liam Lawrence and all their creative players misfired throughout. The delivery for the goal came from an unusual source in Hayden Mullins as he was the only Pompey man interested in taking a corner following the replacement of David Cotterill.
Two plus points were the attendance which at 14,349 was much better that the club had expected and the point makes Pompey all but safe from the drop; Scunthorpe would have to win their last six games and make up a thirty eight goal difference. For those watching the bottom of the table there are two massive game next Saturday when Palace entertain Scunny and Preston welcome Sheffield United, they will sort a view things out!
Top of the table
Yes Pompey are currently top of the Championship table!! Which one you will find out later.
Groundsman frozen out
Phil Frost Pompey's groundsman has quit after only a short time in the job. Fans will have noticed how good the pitch looked yesterday sadly though Phil has had enough and is going back to his native Somerset.
His stay has been riddled with problems not of his making such as the so called frost covers that were in fact to enhance the growth of the grass. Well they have been put to good use in the last four weeks helping the pitch recover from the ravages of the south coast winter.
Rumour has it the new pitch tender will come from Bournemouth but keep it quiet!
The club have told the staff that talk of an imminent take over is only paper talk. They have stressed to staff that they will know anything before the local rag! They did however add that some parties were 'sniffing around`.
History Lesson - Memories
A couple of weeks ago I gave you lots of ideas about where you could find more about the clubs history either through the Internet or the bookshelf. This week I look at something much nearer home - your memory!!
Now I appreciate that some of you will not be burdened with the memory I have which will probably fade with age but there are ways of stirring the old grey matter to recall those great games or odd occurrences from the Pompey past.
One way is to collect programmes and then slip a note inside with team changes and other comments. Believe it or not some people do that with the report cut from the local rag. Very useful as a reference and or course they also increase in value. Quite a number of you collect programmes I know. Talking to Rob (sea-juicer) recently and he is trying to collect all of Pompey's FA Cup games since the war! Nearly there too!
Another way is to use your laptop and cut all the articles on the Internet about Pompey to a directory and save them by the date. One of the Vital Pompey editorial team does it that way!
I think that using pompeyrama is also an excellent way to get the memories flowing. Use our daily link to 'On this day in history` published every morning and you will see a list of all games played on this day since 1938 - Phil at pompeyrama is planning to expand that during the close season too.
If you think you were at a game then click on the link and you go straight to the match details with the Pompey team scorers substitutes etc.; then you can say 'I was there!'
The last week has been one of those weeks when there have been plenty to stir the memory - let`s have a look back
Mon 8 Apr 1985
Div 2 Fulham A 3-1
Dillon, Webb 2
Routine away win but when we got back to the car it had been flooded on the Thames towpath. Soggy trip home.
Sat 7 Apr 2007
PL Manchester Utd H 2-1
Taylor, 1 og
Who will ever forget that Ferdinand own goal?
Sat 7 Apr 1973
Div 2 Blackpool H 1-0
The day of my Brother`s first wedding which was at 2:30 in Francis Avenue. After the service straight out the church legged it to Fratton Park and gained acces though the little gate in the Fratton End. Arrived just as teams came out for the second half. Still 0-0 phew! One minute later Ray Hiron scored the winner at the Fratton End and we went home happy. Got to the reception in Arundel Street double quick and nobody missed me!! Never have thanked ray for waiting for me either.
Mon 7 Apr 1980
Div 4 Aldershot A 2-1
Easter Monday day trip to Aldershot for about 10,000 fans! Sun shone and the recently departed Colin Garwood could not prevent a Pompey victory as promotion began to look a possiblity. Strangely the tree next to where I was stood spontaneously combusted in the second half! Is that possble?
Wed 6 Apr 1966
Div 2 Huddersfield H 2-1
Pompey had a daunting run of games against promotion chasing clubs as they fought relegation (as usual) we won them all Huddersfield, Coventry and Wolves were dispatched we climbed to finish twelfth In this game Brian Lewis sat on the ball in the second half as Pompey took the mickey out of their opponents. A Town player - no sorry name has gone - ran up and kicked Louie right up the M1!! A red card resulted, well it didn`t as red cards were not used until the 1970 World Cup. The first time I had ever seen a player sent off.
Sat 6 Apr 1963
Div 2 Stoke City H 0-3
Stanley Matthews makes his final Fratton Park appearance just 29 years 3 months and 16 days after his first. He looked to the on-looking eleven year old (me) like something out of the history books. Pompey left back that day given the chance of watching the maestro was Alf Noakes a player I had long forgotten, there is no danger of me forgetting my only sight of Matthews though.
Sat 5 Apr 2008
FASF West Bromwich Albion N 1-0
Sun 5 Apr 1992
FASF Liverpool N 1-1
Two FA Cup semi finals now surely you can remember those great days!!
Note to ed. - Rug, what happened to 3rd April?
Safety Advisory Group
Steve Compton has been elected to represent fans on the Safety Group. The group is made up of representatives of the Football Licensing Authority, Hampshire Police, Hampshire Fire Brigade and the club. It had been seen by fans as a secret forum but the Fans Conference now have an observer at meetings to report the goings on back to us the supporters.
I have Steve's full notes of the March meeting - if you want to read them drop me a PM.
Pompey top of the league
Statisticians will spend time producing all manner of information for those mad enough to read it and I came across a league table that shows Pompey clear at the top.
Talking to Chix yesterday he had no idea as to what it could be but it is based on results. It fact it is based on away games against clubs in the top half of the table.
Pompey have played ten of the top twelve away from home and collected sixteen points at an average of 1.6 per game. The next sides Watford and Hull only average 1.33. However if you look at the table visiting clubs in the bottom half then you see the problem as Pompey lie 21st with only Sheffield United, Scunthorpe and Palace below them.
The reason we have failed to make the playoffs is because we cannot beat the strugglers, it is as simple as that!!
Right I'm off to work on my new statue!!
