Jose Mourinho Rates Pompey Target

One of Vital Pompey`s members brought this to my attention (Pompey Junglist). These comments come from Jose Mourinho regarding Pompey target Fernandes in March 2005.

Apparently Chelsea where interested in the player and it was Mourinho that dubbed him the next Makelele.

'Even though his conversion to central midfield was relatively recent, I do not think that, at 19, Makelele was a better player than Manuel Fernandes,' said Mourinho.

'From my vantage point, this kid looks calm, wise, sensible and, according to Tiago, deserves all the luck, because he is a nice person.

'I follow him very carefully. He is very strong defensively, and suited to pressurising teams in their own half.

'Without being tall, he seems to be sufficiently agile to compete in the air. His passing is accurate, he takes good positions near the opposition's box and has a powerful shot.'

Let's Get Him Pompey!

I didn't realise how highly rated this kid is. He just missed out on the World Cup & an MSN search chucked up loads of articles that eulogise about him being one of European footballs finest prospects. Storrie! Don't mess this up...
Pompey Junglist
haha he will do his best, thanks for the tip off mate
lmatthews
Les, there are two 'p's in apparently.
Pompey4europe
Gotta be better than Amdy Faye, should be ideal in that kind of role/capacity.
Tantona
The next makele?? I very much doubt it kids!!
woddywoo
This could be one of our biggest signings of the window if we can get him. Go on PS show us you can close
bluedr
If he was the next makalele then i reckon the top clubs would be 'swooping' for him by now.
FEn_100
He'd be going to a top club if he was the next makalele, I doubt he's that good!
Trig the yid
Lets hope we get him. He sounds good but i'm not sure about the makalele link. As long as he is better than Amdy Faye and Nigel Quasie lets give him a go.
POMPEYMEV
haha better be! Good spot pompey4europe

No spell checker? Come on Les, you're supposed to be a journalist.

Another name in the hat, ******* big hat we've got. Not sure whose head it's for? Suggestions on a postcard to...
storagematt
Give him some experience and we'll buy him when Makele's legs go.

I've got to admit I don't know much about him, and when I heard rumours of 6-8m going around I was surprised. If he's as good as they say snap him up. You do think though that if he was the next "Makelele" or player of such type he'd be at a top club already? But hey he soon will be when he signs for the mighty Pompey :)
pompeyrug
If Jose says he's good - then he's good! PS, Do you want Robert Huth?
merlin
Guess Jose know's his stuff, his record is testiment to that. If boro pulled the plug on the Huth deal with doubts over injury/fitness why should things be any different for us? Is it worth a £5m risk...
pompeyrug
I think we go in at £1m up front & pay installments for each game he plays. Similar to that when we signed the useless Ricardo Fuller, the giraffe on iceskates, from Preston before he went to Scum.
storagematt
He is a very good young player and would be a great signing, Jose Mourinhos rates him to so he gotta be good
sambache3592
I don't doubt he's a top young defener, so if the problems aren't that bad we should get him. For £1m up front, plus installments for games he plays we'd have almost nothing to lose. Boro are meant to be reviving the deal themselves anyway though...
pompeyrug
Well if we don't get some talent in soon you all know which end of the league we will be scrapping it.
pompeygray
Jose rated Perrin as well:)
danonash
" no way will you be scrapping it, youve too much talent for that"
