'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sir Bobby Throws Hat Into Ring

Sir Bobby Robson has thrown his experienced hat into the ring to take over the managers spot at Pompey vacated by Allain Perrin this week. Ruud Gullit has already rejected an initial approach according to the press and Simon Jordan has blocked any overtures for Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie.

Bobby Robson, now 72 years old, hasn't worked since being sacked in August 2004 from Newcastle.

Robson told BBC Radio Newcastle 'I am competent to do another job. Where it is I don't know. I am waiting for the right job to come along. If the job came along I would take it, even at my age. I still love being on the pitch. It is what I like and what I am good at, and with respect, I am not being egotistical here. I miss Saturday afternoons, being with the players, being on the pitch and I miss the thrill of training and playing and getting results.'

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric dropped a hint following the departure of Perrin suggesting the next man will be British, although that contradicts reports that he approached Dutchman Ruud Gullit! Mandaric said: 'I really believe a knowledge of British football is an underestimated asset in a manager and the demand of Premier League football are intense.'
