One to target? Craig Mackail-Smith

Pompey will very much be undertaking another rebuilding job this summer, although this summer gives us a fantastic opportunity to do this within realistic boundaries.

We could and should be looking to bring in solid championship standard players, with the 'potential' ability to play at a slightly higher level, paying them 'realistic', 'fair' and 'sustainable' championship level wages - no more of the overhyped and overinflated premier league nonsense wage!

Funds for transfers will, again, quite clearly be limited so it is all the more important that we target as many 'decent' and, as much as possible, 'proven' players at this level, or at least players with the ability to do so.

On Friday, much to my surprise, I notice that Craig Mackail-Smith was going to be out of contract with Peterborough this summer.

And what is more is he has made it clear that he is leaving them on a free this summer...

The guy has been steadily, in fact more than steadily, doing this business throughout the leagues and certainly knows where the goal is.

A prolific partnership with Aaron McLean over the years was eventually broken when McLean left to join Hull, although for me Mackail-Smith is the better striker of the pair.

In many ways he is similar to Peter Crouch, although he is much more of a 'natural goalscorer' than Crouchy.

I would 'think' that Steve Cotterill will know enough about the guy from his time in football and would very much hope that he is one of the names that is being looked at as a possible summer recruit?

Yep, I would be more than happy if we could bring the guy to Fratton - and on a free would make it even better...

Players on a free, good, but because they are going to you on a free will always demand a higher wage, so it depends on their value, so this does not always become the bargain it first seems.

you are totally right about that yong, but it depends the 'standard' of free you go after... the likes of jamo, sol, distin etc. were NEVER going to be cheap frees, the likes of mackail-smith, altho i suspect he would get alittle more now than he might have - especially as he is now in the scotland squad - will not be anywhere near the scales that previous free agents have been.

I think this guy us in much demand and he knows it, he has been clearly sorting a departure for a while. Given this I believe he has already agreed his destination and would be quite shocked if it was Pompey.

Matt Tubbs is the one I recommend. £60,000 from Sailsbury to Crawley last summer and 33 goals this season. Price I think about £400,000 + sell on's. I also think he would fit within our 10K a week

matt tubbs was rumoured to have been at the club earlier in the year for a private gander at him..CMS..i have been saying that for two seasons i think

Matt Tubbs has been doing wonders. Get him as soon as possible. He is hungry for goal.
