Petrov Deal 'close'

The Stilian Petrov deal has been described as an insider as "close."

Pompey are ready to pay Celtic the 4.5 million they are looking for. Although Celtic have declared this as an acceptable price, they have also made it clear to Pompey that they would have to sign a replacement first. They may not have this option with Petrov pleading with his manager to let him go.

Redknapp said: 'We decided to give it another go with Stilian because I'd really like to get him."

'It is entirely up to Celtic what happens with the bid and I wouldn't tell them what they should do. I would very much like to get a deal done.'

Petrov is thought to have already spoken to Portsmouth about a possible move.

'I have had many offers and I have spoken with a couple of managers,' Petrov told a Bulgarian radio station.

'I won't say who they are but they have made me offers. The Portsmouth offer seems to be the most realistic.

'I really need another challenge and I believe England is the place for me to go.

'I know Celtic are unhappy but I have to leave. Everything is in their hands.'

If you steal Stan after tapping him the way you have, you deserve all the childishness that goes with him. But you expect to sign a 9 million pound guy for 3.5?? Go and grow up.

Well at least we can gather from the amusing Weetims' remarks that Stan is worth signing. Let's hope this saga comes to a close soon with him safely on the payroll.

"PETROV FOR POMPEY" would sound great being sung around Fratton Park. Is that sower grapes weetim67. Once he signs you listern to all the Jocks slag him of saying his crap and not worth the money we have paid for him. Well watch and learn wee boy!!! At least Petrov wants to move his career forward rather than stagnate in the SPL Micky Mouse league. The only reason players sign for Celtic & Rangers is money because it isn't to improve there football skills in that league. Playing for those two must be the easiest job in the world.

He has that 'sick look' that many people who have lived in Scotland for some time develop, he clearly needs some time on the South Coast to reinvigorate. It sounds like weetim67 could use some quality time away from Glasgow too.

Hmmm, let me see... CELTIC CLUB RECORDS The Scottish Cup final win against Aberdeen F.C. in 1938 was attended by a crowd of 146,433 at Hampden Park in Glasgow, which remains a record for a club match in European football. Celtic currently hold the UK record for an unbeaten run in professional football: 62 games. First British club to reach the final of the European Cup. First Scottish, British and northern European team to win the European Cup. Only club in history to have won the European Cup with a team comprised entirely of home-grown talent. In 1967, Celtic achieved the feat of winning every competition they played in (including the European Cup). Hold the record for the highest score in a domestic cup final: Celtic 7 - 1 Rangers, Scottish League Cup Final 1957. Hold the record for the highest attendance for a club football match anywhere in Europe: Celtic v Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final 1937. Official attendance 146,433. Hold the record for the highest attendance for a European club competition match: Celtic v Leeds Utd in the European Cup semi-final 1970. Official attendance 133,961. In 2003, Celtic took an estimated 80,000 fans to Seville, Spain, for the UEFA Cup Final. This is widely acknowledged as being the largest 'away' support in Sporting History. HONOURS European Cup: Winners 1967. Runner-up 1970. UEFA Cup: Runner-up 2003. Petrov is a quality player, I think he will work wonders for Pompey. I'll be sorry to see him go, but if he doesn't want to wear the shirt, then it's better he moves on. Personally I'd rather see us get 6 million plus for him, and yes, he is worth it, but having said that, we could have seen him go for nothing a year ago, so lets get it sorted. Petrov didn't go behind anyones back like the Millers and McNamaras of this World, so good luck to him, and good luck to Pompey. Keep the Faith

You are right FEn, they are just knobs. They won't be laughing so much at the end of the season when they are doing rubbish cos english teams have stolen all their good players. Stillian Petrov is their star player and he wants to leave to come to pompey. That shows how good the SPL is. Pompey may be junk compared to chelsea etc but..... your scottish!!!! enough said.

Gentlemen... I enjoy a little footie banter as much as the next person, but I'm getting a little bit concerned that some of you actually believe that Portsmouth are a better football team than Celtic. Let me assure you - THEY ARE NOT! To argue otherwise is to show that you have absolutely no understanding of football. Relax guys, there's plenty of teams in the world that are not in the Premiership who are better than Portsmouth. Celtic just happen to be one of the many. No need to get all wound up about it.

Anyway, I digress.... getting back to the matter at hand. Petrov is not our 'star' player. We do not have any 'star' players. We have a team of good players who all play for the jersey and therefore each other. This is why we are so hard to beat and why (on our day) we can beat the best in the world (Barcelona and Juventus over the last few seasons anyone?). We also have some of the best fans in the world, all housed in one of THE GREAT sporting arena's in world football. That's not only my opinion, it's also one held by a certain chap called Beckenbauer. Celtic Park is almost on top of the pitch and when the place starts rocking... well it's a sight (and sound) to behold. So many top players remark on the atmosphere at Celtic Park after Champions League games - some even say that they would love to play their. Never heard of the Kaiser saying that Fratton Park was amongst the best sporting arena's on the planet, or a certain buck-toothed Brazilian saying that he would love to play in front of such passionate fans. Back to Petrov. Good player. Worth about 5 Million. Box to box. Great engine and can score from midfield. Can, however, occcasionally go missing in action, but generally reliable. Good luck next season (you'll need it).

AND just to settle this... The 2006 UEFA Club Rankings have Celtic at (an admittedly disappointing as we appear to have slipped a half dozen places since last season) 24th. Whilst Pompey don't even appear to register in the top 231. Oops!

Genuine sane Pompey fans would not argue that Portsmouth are bigger than Celtic. However to some players the draw of playing in the Prem makes playing for Pompey more attracive than playing for Celtic in the SPL.

One thing, both Pompey and Celtic have very passionate support. Something to agree on I reckon.

Agreed! I'm just playing Devils Advocat Mr Cropped. Of course, EVERY fan should think their team is the best. But it's my duty to respond for the cause. No argument about players wanting to test themselves in the Premiership. Better league by far. Still, I think Celtic would survive in there (and potentially do very well when the EPL money started rolling in). Most younger players buy the hype and feel they have to test themselves against the 'best'. Petrov is one of them. One of our icons (a certain Mr Larsson) had a bit more confidence in his abilities and knew just how good he was - he never had to go to England to prove it (despite big money interest from Man U at one point). Again... good luck.
