'If It's Football, It's Vital'

This is beyond a joke now!

A footballer is contracted to a club, they have a 'relegation release clause', that only he can activate, so this player has plenty of power as it is!

This player, Tal Ben-Haim by the way, then leaves to sign for another club, West Ham, only for this to fall through - talk of failed medicals and a failure to agree terms is behind this...

He eventually leaves to join this club on loan for 5-months with them having the option to sign him at the end of the loan.

This loan draws nearer to a conclusion and little sign of a permanent move, or loan extension, can be seen so when the agreement finally does end he returns to his parent club, Pompey, so it should be as simple as him then playing for us as he is under contract with PFC until the summer of 2012.

But no, this is Portsmouth Football Club we are talking about here so it cannot be that easy!

Talks of a dispute with West Ham do the rounds, although they deny this.

PFC are not paying his 36,000 p/w wages, although this is disputable and no one really seems to know - although I find it hard to believe that we are not.

The agent of the said player then decides to say that you will need to 'talk to Portsmouth' to find out what the situation is!

No one is available to comment on this statement...

It is a sorry state of affairs that a person is able to collect massive amounts of money and still get paid for 'not doing his job', more disappointingly so is that it is becoming more and more common in football these days that footballers are happy to collect the cash and not work for this.

Well over 100,000 p/m, over 1m per year will be paid to this bloke who is not doing anything to 'earn' this.

This situation is a bloody joke, and long since became farcical!

If the guy is under contract to us then he is being paid by us, so as such he needs to start doing more than just 'train', he needs to be a part of the squad to at least start doing something to justify, even in small part, picking up any money at all.

We are paying more than enough to footballers who cannot/will not get involved for whatever reason and this ridiculous farce that sees us pay out the best part of 300,000 p/m I would think to 3 players that are doing NOTHING makes my blood boil!

Jeez, come on guys lets get this farcical situation sorted out once and for all, I think it has dragged on for more than long enough and cannot be that complex, surely...

Agree - im sure we will get the usual people saying its not our business and contracts are complex etc etc but really, why compromises based on common sense cant be reached seems unbelieveable.. what is best for Pompey - pay their wages and not play them - or even offer to pay a bonus of something even a couple of hundred thousand between them and have them available for the rest of the season, that way we get 3 more players for 200k extra? Yes this will undoubtedly be more complicated but the principle is there.... if, as rumoured, the players were asked to take a pay cut straight away, then we have to question the intelligence of the people running the club in my opinion. But we will probably never know, even as the major contributors to the cashflow at Pompey..

all players should be on a pay-per-play basis to be honest. if you are ill/injured you get dispensatory wages, but that would solve a lot of problems with wages. whats that players? you dont like the sound of that and youre gonna do a runner?... fine by me... there will always be men out there who will play for this club... even if they are 50 years old, overweight and enjoy a bovril at half time!!

Hey... pessimist I hope you weren't describing blokes like me there :-)

Of he is being paid then he must surely train; it's ridiculous- and insulting to the creditors.

Get players back in the real world where like us they shoul get paid to work, and warned/sacked for not performing. Simples
    Midge
Only at Pompey could you have 3 players earning around 100k a week not playing. (TBH, Hughes and Brown)

Yet another waste of the Internet. Is there not a restriction on the number of teams a footballer can play for in one season? I think it is two or possibly three. I'm guessing the club may be looking to move his salary on for the remainder of the season by loaning him out using the 'Emergency Loan' system. Why would you play and risk him being injured before the closure of the loan window at the end of March. Please do engage a little more thought before slamming the club's tactics.
    SensibleSoccer
Well Mr Soccer - thats a very 'out of the box' viewpoint.... lets see where he is at the end of the loan window shall we - but doesnt seem that there are any sniffing around him at the moment... and what are your views on Hughes and Brown? Theat its prudent the club pay their wages until the end of the seaon??
    pompeyweller
Well Weller, with regard to Hughes and Brown I can see both sides' view. From what I've read the players made an offer to the club to take 50% of what they would be due for the extra year, the club counter offered (I'm assuming the club wanted the extra year waived) which trhe players rejected. I imagine that the club tried then to offload, at least one, these two and TBH in January. This didin't happen and Utaka was sold to reduce the wage bill and balance the books. We'll have to wait and see what the end of March brings, but either way none will be 'match fit'
    SensibleSoccer
I hope that the club wanted to waive the extra year but Ive also heard rumours which state the club offered an instant reduction... im loath to believe ths however as even our stewards cant be that stupid, can they?! Why not off them, as i said before, 75k each to waive their extensions... that way we get new players for little (relatively) extra outlay and a happier squad? Like I say, we dont know - but to take the view that its more sensible to not play TBH than to play him is not, as you say, engaging thought, in my opinion nor is making sweeping statements on 'assumption'. And 'match fit'?! Hughes hadnt played for weeks bfore the leeds game so the argument there has little substance. The whole sorry state of affairs sheds no good light on the club.....
