'If It's Football, It's Vital'

No deal? Good! It was never on anyway, right?

The 'rumour mill' has been 'linking' Pompey to a loan move for Benni McCarthy.

Stories of West Ham being willing to let the 33-year-old leave Upton Park with Avram Grant paying 80% of his £60,000 p/w salary - as The News put it, I think that should be West Ham paying, as it would not be Grant paying it anyway! - have been doing the rounds.

Such talks have seen people 'optimistic' that such a loan move could come off.

For me this had disaster written all over it as he is an overweight, out of touch aging footballer who is exactly what we SHOULD NOT be looking for!

Yep he does have a history that shows he knows where the net is, although he also has a history that shows he can throw his toys out of the pram and is not against sulking or disrupting things.

Above all else what has he done over the past 12-18-months or so, bar pick up huge wages! Boy am I glad no deal came off last January when we were also 'linked' with him.

Ok, you can argue that we are not in a position to be picky and choosey, but I would much prefer us picking up 'cast offs' that are hungry to prove a point and want to play and give their all. The only hungry that McCarthy would be hungry for would probably be the McDonalds or KFC across the road from Fratton!

For me McCarthy has drifted into the 'football mercenary' mould in recent times and we have seen more than enough of these over the years thank you very much. Even if West Ham paid 100% of his wages I would not want him at Fratton Park...

Such a deal was almost certainly never going to happen, so news that 'a deal will not happen' does not surprise me - not that it worries me as I am very much of the thanks, but no thanks way of thinking with this anyway.

I think it's less about footbal mercenary than he has lost his love of the game, of football. Rumours persist of trouble at the training ground and home, gone is the sprightly striker replaced by a defensive, listless personality shadow of his former self; quite sad really. Tbh with the thought of Webber returning around mid march do we need another striker on the wage bill.
