A quick move would be good

A quick move would be good

Not for the first time Mikey Brown is being 'linked' with a move to Wolves.

Having missed out on Steve Sidwell it is being 'said' that Mick McCarthy has 'identified' Brown - if memory serves me correctly one of the clubs that wanted him when we signed him - as an option to 'beef up' his midfield.

Brown, and Richard Hughes for that matter, is not going to play for Pompey again so the sooner we can move him on the better it will be for everyone.

Although the problem is would 'moving on' actually be the best thing for Brown?

Quite clearly a pay cut would have to be taken for him to join Wolves, or any other club, but is this something that he is willing to do or will he be happy to sit out his contract with Pompey on 'above average' premier league wages and hope that a player in his mid 30s, having sat out 6-months worth of football, will be on someone's shopping list come the summer when his contract ends and he leaves on a free...

I cannot see us holding out for much money for his transfer, if indeed any - for either player for that matter - so, as said, I would 'think' it all boils down to how much they actually want wages wise in order to get a move.

Browny is someone, as said a few times, that I would like to keep as the simple truth that it is nothing against his ability, he offers a lot, but we just cannot afford to keep him and the sooner he moves on the better...

I still have the thought in my mind that some sort of deal might be workable, so long as his wages are right for Wolves, for such a transfer to form a part of the loan deal to bring Greg Halford back until the summer?

A swap deal with Halford would do me but apparently there is a massive gulf between the wages of the two. Brown offers a lot but only in parts, his uncontrolled discipline problems affecting his games playable ratio throughout his career. As Pompey are finding out there is no point having quality if it is not allowed off the bench; all that said you can't fault Brown for effort. Another factor could be Brown if he does go there he will certainly be a champs player next season; don't see wolves surviving this year.

We need new young players like Brown, Hughes, urgently. Players who are prepared to tackle hard (usually fairly) to protect our very weak back line. At the moment we are an oppositions dream. No midfielders closing down they just run straight through Uslaka, Lawrence (no criticism there he is our flair player), Nugent (no criticism there he is our main striker) and Kanu (no criticism there he has all the brains (but we can hardly expect a Jack Wiltshire athletic performance there) that leaves us Hayden Mullins and as hard as he may try he cannot do everything.

If Brown was happy to stay with us on 50% of his wages,as we have been told, then surely he will be happy to move to Wolves, as they would probably pay him that, wouldn't they?

Still sorry to see him go, but it has to be, so the sooner he goes the sooner his wages are off Pompey's bills and perhaps Cotters has more chance of getting someone in. Maybe. Hopefully.

Being honest there are some good players at PL clubs who must be accessible for a small fee or loan. It's just whether SC has identified them and whether they want to come to our club given the last 2 years history.

I have been hoping, probably in vain that the club could come to a comprimise with Hughes and Brown. These two players offer the club and the side alot. They are essentially worthless and I could see an arguement for other clubs offering to take them on if Portsmouth paid them like scrapping a car. Perhaps if they have not moved on by the end of the month the club and the players can sort this out.

Topping last seasons tally the aim

78pts was only enough for a play-off place last season so you suspect we'll have to better that for a top 3 finish this coming season, which begins with Carlisle at Fratton.

Done Deal - Smith in permanently from Swindon

The interest Pompey retained in Smith, with him 'in our sights' has resulted in him returning to the Blues on a permanent basis after signing for an 'undisclosed fee' from Swindon.

    Cushioning the blow

Much, that needed saying, about Webster's exit for Ipswich and the arrival of Clarke in return (and cash) has been said hasn't it? Doyle's been spot on with what he said.
