From the vault: Opponents in focus - Scunthorpe
Another of Pompey's no power championship opponents will be Scunthorpe, so they are next to come under the microscope as Pompeytim has a look at them - we revisit this ahead of the meeting tomorrow...
Perhaps unfairly, the name S****horpe conjures up images of a grim, northern town for me, in a manner similar to that of Grimsby. Funny then that geographically S****horpe isn't a million miles from Grimsby. It is sat approximately 10 miles south of the river Humber, some 15-20 miles from Hull, Grimsby and Doncaster.
I have to confess that I know very little about S****horpe, and am excited about ticking off a new club when I visit this season.
The club was formed in 1899, but then merged with a local side, Lindsey United to become S****horpe and Lindsey United. The club didn't actually make it into the Football League until 1950. Since then they haven't really won much, other than the Third Division North in 1957/58, the same season that they dropped the "and Lindsey" part of their name to revert to S****horpe United, and more recently League One in 2006/07.
They are currently having their most successful period ever, having been in the bottom division as recently as 2005, and now sat in the Championship.Head-to-head
Pompey and 'The Iron' have only met 18 times over the years and Pompey are narrowly ahead, having won 7 times and S****horpe only 5.
Pompey have scored 34 times and S****horpe 26.
Memorable games include a 6-1 thrashing of S****horpe at Fratton Park in August 1979; S****horpe winning a 7-goal thriller 4-3 at Fratton Park in February 1964 and Pompey coming away from the North-east on the end of a 5-1 drubbing in November 1960.
The most recent game was a 1-nil win for S****horpe in January 1980 (when I was just 27 days old!!)League Standings in Last 5 years

So our trip to S****horpe could be the one to seal our place back in the Premier League…The Man in Charge
Nigel Adkins replaced Brian Laws at S****horpe in 2006. Adkins was previously the physio at the club.
Adkins' only prior managerial experience was at Bangor City, where he left in 1996.
Therefore it is fair to say that Adkins is a relatively new manager, but has so far guided S****horpe to two promotions and one relegation, so it has been an eventful time for him at Glanford Park.Key Player
Top goalscorer Gary Hooper has gone to Celtic for £2.4m, so arguably the key man has left. After that Paul Hayes, another top scorer for the Iron has gone to Preston and Gavin McCann has left for Peterborough. So it is pretty tricky to say who will be the one to watch this season, but be sure that there'll be some transfer activity in the next few weeks.Stadium
The club's old stadium, the Old Showground was considered to be too expensive to renovate, so in 1988 the club moved to a new, purpose-built stadium on the outskirts of S****horpe, Glanford Park.
Glanford Park was the first of the new purpose-built stadia that are now dotted all over the country. It holds 9,088, but the ground is very tidy and modern and there are good views (apparently) from all of the 9,088 seats.
The club's record attendance came at the old ground, 23,935, to none other than Pompey, in the 4th round of the cup in 1954.Written by Pompeytim
