Nugent looking for more goals

Having managed to get himself fit to face Doncaster Dave Nugent then put in a typically committed Nugent like performance and eventually scored.

To be honest I thought that Nugent was somewhat wasted in the 1st half and the set-up with the 4 strikers we had on the field left us somewhat lopsided and certainly unbalanced - definitely in the 2nd half his effort and commitment were rewarded more.

His bizarre equaliser, which I still do not quite know how it went in, brought us level at 2-2. Even he admits it was fortunate: 'I think it came off the back of my arm. I knew I had to throw my whole body at it but it hit my arm and went in.

'We got a little bit of luck but it got us back into the game.'

Alas, they all count though, right? Although this counted for little in the end really...

Although he said that we will pick ourselves up and look to get back on track against Barnsley at the weekend - the start, of what he hopes, can be a better return of goals for him: 'I always want to score. I've got five now and I'm hoping to be in double figures by the end of the season.

'We've got John Utaka on the left causing all kinds of havoc. He's showing his true form and it's up to me and Kits to get on the end of those crosses.'

Assuming Nugent remains with Pompey for the duration of the season, which I 'think' he will but is by no means certain, then if he did not get into double figures, at least, then he would have had a bad season, even though - to be fair - he is working his nuts off more often than not.

If the finishes, for the 2 goals he had disallowed, are anything to go by then he will manage 'at least' 10-goals this season, the chipped effort in the 1st half was fantastic and the finish in the 2nd equally as good in a different way.

I think, although I might be wrong, that this is the first time that Nugent has actually 'properly' talked about scoring more goals, and with any real conviction, maybe thinking he should and believing that he will, which - fingers crossed - will not be a bad thing as he must actually believe that he has the ability to do this and the faith that he will is really there?

Time will tell...

Nugent could not score on a regular basis in a room full of inebriated sex starved women.

Good to hear Nugget saying he thinks he can score more goals. In fairness SC has tld him to take a touch to the side before striking when on a one to one with the keeper and that paid off in his last game before his injury. All being well this increased confidence in himself and also another week of fitness training will furnish him and ultimately the team with a few more goals this campaign.

Goals (as long as we are scoring them) are always welcome, but we are crying out for a settled back four (with a dependable centre pairing) otherwise we are always going to need to score 3 or more goals to get anything out of a game. The leaky defence means the midfield need to track back and try to cover all the time and there is too big a gap between the defence and the forwards. The result is long balls punted downfield for Kitson to try and nod on. With no runners breaking from midfield, possession is lost far too often, puttting us back under pressure.

These are welcome words from Nugent, and words we've heard several times before. Lets hope he does the business this time.
