At least they're consistent...consistently bad!

At least they're consistent...consistently bad!

Referees, and 'referees assistants' have, lets face it, a difficult and pretty much thankless job, so some sympathy can be given to them and I appreciate that it is a tough job but the standard of the officials has been poor, at best, this season...

I am not talking 'premier league', I do not take much notice of this but have seen, or at least heard, of some of these 'high profile' gaffs.

For a few years now Tony (UKTony) and I, who sit next to each other in the North Lower, have constantly talked about the officials and how bad they can often be - the linesmen, sorry referees assistants, have been particularly poor. From our seats we can pretty much see right alone the line when teams attack the Fratton End, so we see a fair amount and the number of times the calls have been very wrong is unreal - but not as unreal as the amount of times they fail to even do the basics, keeping up with play...

One of the thoughts that many of us had was 'at least relegation would bring a better standard of officials' as many of the top flight ones seem to think that they have celebrity status, and this goes to their head.

Well, these thoughts have proven false, right?

If anything these officials have been even worse!

Tuesday nights ref, what his name was escapes me - not that it should I guess - then again the only reason I would care to know it would be so I can worry if he crops up again as he was the latest in a string of poor referees, and officials, this league has seen.

It is, as said, a tough job but the more these guys stroll around like 'little Hitler's', with an apparent superior complex about them too, the tougher time they will get, especially if the calls being made are as poor as they have been. Perhaps Tiny Penis (Tony Pulis) is right, whilst you cannot be too harsh on them maybe these officials do need to be reviewed and rated more by managers as the poor decisions that they can make can cost teams, managers and clubs big time. Being held more accountable is probably something that is needed.

Chix, Rob (sea-juicer) and I were talking about this on our way home from the QPR game and agreed that, if nothing else, at least these officials are consistent - unfortunately this consistency is in the fact that they are consistently bad!

So, with that in mind in some ways they cannot be knocked for this nor, to be fair, can they be accused of undue bias to a home or away side because all in all they have been as consistent in their calls both ways and winding up both sets of fans as they are being fairly even in their poor decision making both ways...

To be fair to the linesmen, sorry assistant ref's I did read an article published that said that it had been scientifically prooven that their job was impossible due to the speed of play comapred with the processing speed of the brain. It doesn't help however as you point out, that they don't keep up with the last defender.

Perhaps it would ruin the game, but technology is advanced enough now that gps could be put in the socks of all players and the ball, which could easily indicate any offsides!

There's no excuse when a player is standing off-side, but it's a different story when a player times his run and the linesman has to watch for when the ball is kicked and where the player is. If the refs are all consistently 'bad' it shows what a difficult job it is - and tv replays from all angles don't help their cause.

being the assistant referee if by far the harder job. I also admit that i feel the standard of refing in english football has fallen considerably. I don't know if they are blooding young ones too early or if its just a physcological thing. Its rare you get a referee who consistently performs well nowadays. maybe thats due to new pressures? The fact is the FA don't know and the referees don't know so it isn't going to change anytime soon. I do completely agree tahst Tuesday ref did seem like a "mini hitler". This may have been a result of the pressure or just the occasion himself. Its a tough job but they don't neccessarily help themselves!

A win at Wimbledon made sure of a play-offs place. Technically we can finish in the top 3 but this would require an unlikely set of results from too many clubs wouldn't it?
